Commuting - Riding my stumpjumper FSR to work..

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well the message from the dr's official. After landing 6-7ft off a jump wrong onto my hand and face, I've broken the bone connecting my right ring finger to my hand. He said I could still ride as long as it's slow and on flat ground.
My commute is half very rough pavement and half smooth. I recently sold my commuter so all I have now is my light weight roadie and my stumpjumper FSR.

Before I get a new commuter, which is most likely some kind of cross bike, for at least the next month and a half or so, I'm gonna be taking the stumpy full suspension to work. That's sure gonna look weird when I see the usual commuters on the road and they're on their fixies and I'm no longer on my track bike...

Anyway, the thing currently has these tires, http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=35741

Eventually I'm gonna replace em anyway, you guys think its better for the next month and a half to ride the 9 miles each way on them or get some 26x1.5 slicks? I can stand to save the $30 or so by not getting the slicks.

What's wrong with the roadie again?

Just grind it out on the knobbies for such a short time frame.

Road riding on MTB tires really isn't the end of the world, particularly if the tires are half-wore-out already.

There are worse tires to have for commuting!

You might look at xmart etc. for some Bell (CST) "Bike Path" tires. I've had them in a 26x1/75". They weren't bad for a $10 tire. They have a continuous bead down the center, so they don't roll too bad.
Another option is to get 1 slick and put it on the front. Then you can decide if it's worth buying the 2nd.

Potholes and broken pavement is too harsh for my right hand, which has a broken bone in it.

30 tpi is not going to be a low rolling resistance tire. If you ride em, at least max out the psi. by the end of the month, they'll probably be almost semislicks. To make it go faster, you can always skid a LOT.
