I've never worn a helmet, and I've never shopped for one. The ones I have seen around all seem ridiculous looking to me. I am curious if there is a regular, low profile sort of helmet available that doesn't look like an alien spaceship? The other topic about helmets made me ask myself why I don't wear one, and for some reason I got a little paranoid about my head.. :)

I wear a $30 BMX helmet. I'm SURE I still look like a dork, but at least I look like a different kind of dork than all the other guys on road bikes. The helmet also has great protection for the base of the skull, way better than normal bike helmets. Mine's black, I like to pretend I'm related to Darth Vader.

i would suggest a bmx helmet of the sort if you are looking to keep it "non-dorky." although i haven't really seen many bmx helmets which appear to be low profile. my only low profile helmet is my road/mtb specialized s1 which i love. most helmet companies make a bmx/dirt jumping helmet that would work.

i have an oldschool pro-tec helmet labelled for "water sports." it's the standard skateboarder/BMX style helmet. it's nice, and i've had many a hard fall while wearing it, and it's still in great shape. it doesn't have that "impact foam" stuff, so it's good for multiple crashes. the outer plastic shell is still fine as well. i'll probably be looking for a new helmet soon though. the inner cloth liner is pretty funky.
oh, and i picked it up for $36.

i have been trying to find one of the old school protec helmets for my new bike when i dirt jump and what not. i figured it could double as my fixie helmet. i am looking at the 661 mullet (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail.htm?stylepkey=11495&style_id=215%20SSOMH2&dept_id=2&deptName=Accessories&sub_id=33&subName=Helmets&lprice=19.98&hprice=19.98&detailName=661%20Mullet%20Helmet) not only because it has a cool name, but seems to be slick too.

I sometimes put on my 1979 skid lid just to freak people out....
Also, although they're not approved here in the US but I see some roadies wearing Euro hair nets....These new styles seem to be more hefty than those classic traditional hair nets. I think they're cool looking and airy.

I think you have issues with your self-worth. If wearing a helmet makes you feel insecure, think how a 4 month stay in a brain injury ward will make you feel.

Last winter I rode in a black hockey helmet with a white face 'cage.'
Ebay, $6.

I didn't say wearing a helmet makes me feel insecure. (??) I'm asking for recommendations so I can start wearing one! (Everyone is a psychiatrist around here now-a-days.)

If you want a recommendation on which helmet to use, read this...
http://www.helmets.org/history.htm
Some helmets work better than others when it comes to protecting the brain, and it is important to understand why. The modern bike helmet basically has two functional parts: the compressible foam inner shell, and the firm outer shell. The inner shell deforms at a specific rate to prevent your head from decelerating to quickly during an impact. The outer shell prevents the foam from shattering and should allow the helmet to slide without snagging on pavement irregularities.
Wearing anything on your head that doesn't accomplish these basic tasks makes you look stupid. Go to target and get yourself a real helmet for $25 and save the modelling for the runway.
My 2 cents,
BK

I dunno if I'm too late Jason, but at the Performance Bike on Halsted and Diversey they had a really nice Giro from a few years ago, used to retail for $140 marked down to $75. It was top of the line in I think 2001 or something.
That was a few months ago so I dunno if they've still got any but it's worth a shot. I really don't care if I look like an alien spacecraft, I just want something that'll protect my ass when I need it...
Jason, I dont think you need any help...A helmet is for some and not for othesr...

Hey DV-
Helmets go on the other end, not your ass. Just a little tip...

DV- I go to Performance pretty regularly, so I will have a look next time I am there.
Everyone else- Looks aren't the most important thing to me, but I just figure if there is a choice why not pick what I like most? :(

I believe Dumpster Vegan has successfully redefined the term "Asshat."
Sounds like a name for a punk band. "Alien Asshat"
