Hi All,

Im brand new to the forums - from sunny Sydney, Australia!

Ive only started researching hub motors for my mountain bike.....beaing fairly hilly around Sydney, I need something with enough torque to cope with my enormous 73kg frame :D

Ive heard that geared hub motors offer more torque, like this kit: http://www.evehicle.com.au/EVS%20EVO%20Conversion%20Kit.shtml?openmenu=5

but ive also heard that these http://goldenmotor.com/ are quite decent also....although are gearless hubs.....not too sure about the quality though??

Anyway I have a few questions;

I have dual hydraulic disc brakes and would like to keep both of them if at all possible, but if i had to give up one of them, it would be the back one....as the front one offers so much more braking force...so id probably be going for a rear hub setup. Also the rear hub motor would probably have superior traction.

Can anyone suggest some decent kits for me in Australia, with some web links if possible?

Cheers,

Mark.

Well, generally a geared hub next to a gearless counterpart will be lighter and more efficient when they get bogged down, such as going uphill. Gearless makes essentially no noise and there's nothing mechanical to wear except two bearings, they're also generally more efficient at low loads such as cruising on the flats.

Golden's quality is hit or miss, service/warranty from china isn't likely to happen. However most people get one that works and seem pleased.

Per their prices I'd say evehicle.com.au are screwing people over... In Ausland Brett White is really good, also if you tell him what you want to do he should be able to help figure something out.

In any case, regardless where you get it from or even if you get it installed by a bike shop, eventually you'll need to learn at least a minimum of how this stuff works. Like it says on Brett's site, it's for people who like to tinker.

Cheers for that response Jean,

I ended up buying a kit from a mob in Melbourne http://www.emtb.com.au and went with there 'stage2' kit, which is a gearless/bruhless 1500w rearhub motor and a good quality LiPo battery pack good for roughly 50km range and a top speed of something like 50km/h+ - the guy also seems to know what he's talking about as he designs his own custom heavy duty frames and battery mount assemblies. A little pricey - but i guess at the end of the day you get what you pay for ;)

These guys also test their kits to destruction with regular weekend bush bash trips in all kinds of conditions - Anyway, fingers crossed here :D:D
