Help for a newb here... new to track anyway.

Still figuring out my gearing and bag list.... I know now that I'm not fast enough to turn 50x15 effectively (racing 35+ / 4's) and that 44x15 is fine for warmup but not for racing - got spunout on the attacks.

So, what gearing do you bring in your bag to warmup, and to race? Do you only switch cogs, or do you switch rings / cogs as well while at the track?

Do you warmup on rollers / trainer? Or only on the track?

What do you do between races (I had a hard time staying loose / warm)?

thanks
Creak.

Unless I'm racing in completely different events on a single program (eg kilo + scratch), I'll usually just pick a gear for the night and setup before I get to the track. I prefer not to be sitting around fiddling with stuff while I'm preparing to race. 90 on the rollers is far easier to push than 90 out on the track.

Warm up and down on the rollers if it's from the gun racing. If it's scratch racing where you put some slow laps in before the sprint, I'll often get onto the bike quite cold.

Everyone has their own preferences with gears, but having said that 44*15 is a really really small gear. I'll usually ride 90 in mass start outside tracks without much banking, 92-94.5 on outside tracks with banking and on fast inside tracks, 94-98.

Where I raced there was an inner track for keeping warm between events and it's all I ever used, but some did bring rollers or windtrainers (often with another bike on it).

If you're racing old guys and 4s, sideshow bob's advice is right on. I always brought all my gearing with me, along with tools, spare cleats, shoelaces (I'm an old guy too), and toe straps. I never installed it. Too much to go wrong and too little to gain. Heck, I didn't even take my front wheel off for transport.
