I currently use a thin skull type hat under my helmet.

What do you use, hat under helmet, cover over helmet, or both? What brand?

Yes it is kind of late to be asking, but I was thinking about this on my ride today (38F with 20mph winds).

On a day like today I wear a thin Nashbar brand skullcap that covers my ears (made by headsweats, I think). It does a nice job breaking up the wind and breathes well so it actually works well for me from approx 50 degrees all the way down to the mid 20's. It does okay in light drizzles, too. Colder than 25ish I wear a windblocker fleece cap under my helmet (made by Outdoor Research).

I've never used a helmet cover, though I think one would be useful for rainy day rides (paired w/ a visor). So basically we probably wear the same stuff. I realize now that this isn't much help to you at all!

Now where's the warm weather so we can stop talking about cold-weather gear!?

On days that are upper 20's to mid 30's Ill wear a LG Hat Cover under my helmet. It effectively blocks the wind and covers my ears. Anything over 35 degrees or so and I wear a generic cycling cap.

I use PI skull caps and balaclavas during the winter....when it gets into the 40's low 50s I use a cycling cap under my helmet. 60+ and I use nothing.

I also use PI skull cap and balaclava. Skull cap to about 50-35, Balaclava below.

My new Ionos Helmet had an internal cap for cold weather. Haven't tired tt yet.

Low to mid 30's and I wear a "hot noggin" under and a helmet cover over. If I get too hot, the cover comes off easily. The cover is great for blocking the wind, the hot noggin has ear flaps. Colder than that and I wear a balaclava and helmet cover.

I have never needed a helmet cover or balaclava. granted I run hot, example today 37, sunny with 15-25 MPH winds. I wore winter socks and vented shoes no booties, tights, fall jersey with arm warmers, wind breaker, and my scull cap. 10 miles in I took off my jacket and skull cap and put it in my jersey pocket.

Everyone is different so wear what keeps you warm not hot so you will go out and ride more. I ride with a guy who is always cold at 60 he wears arm warmers, tights, booties, Skull cap, and a jacket. I am sporting bibs and a jersey. we make a great team and get some odd looks, but we are both comfortable.
