I completed my first 30 mile ride this morning. My previous long ride was 27 miles with an 11 mph average. Today's ride took just under 2 hours, so about 15 mph average speed. I feel pretty good about it. I'm about 6'4" and 285 lbs with aspirations to get some longer rides under my belt.

Congrats! How do you feel physicclly? If you feel pretty good, and did 30, you can do 50! :D (although you may hurt a bit :D )

I do feel pretty good. My legs are a bit tired, but not hurting me. Though, I would probably need 2 water bottles to make 50 miles.

Maybe more than that, and a snack or two as well to feed the machine and keep your energy levels up. ;)

More than two water bottles. Dehydration is a pain.

Figure on 1L just over 1 US Quart per hour, given that most water bottles are 750ML (¾L) given a pace of 15MPH the 50 miler is a little over 3 hours or say 3¼L or just over 4 full bottles, best way to get that capacity, is a 2L CAMELBAK or similar hydration unit, plus 2 bottles. Cheap way of getting that capacity is to strap a 2L pop bottle filled with water on your bike, if you want it cold, fill ¾ full, and pop into the deep freeze, top up just before you leave. Plus have 2 bottles, which you will refill from the pop bottle when you stop for some reason. For bikes with a rack, you can always strap your water supply onto the rack.....

I read a big thing by Hammer Nutrition, and it actually has good info to it. I generally try to consume about 20-30oz water/hour depending on conditions. Any less and if it's over 2 hours, I'm dehydrated like crazy and hurting. Any more and I'm waterlogged which is pretty bad in and of itself. I did the 20-30oz/hour rule on my last long ride and it worked *perfectly*.

Of course, YMMV

You need more than that. Congratulations on your new personal best.
