Southern California - What chain should I buy?

Ok, I've never had to buy a new chain and I'm not entirely sure what kind to buy.

My bike came with Shimano 105 levers, derailers, and crankset and a SRAM (not sure of model) 9 speed cassette. I don't know what brand the current chain is (it has a Z on every few links, if that helps).

Do I need a Shimano chain, a SRAM chain, or does it not matter?

Shimano, KMC, SRAM, Wipperman doesn't matter, as long as you make sure you get a 9-speed chain.

I prefer SRAM 'cause of the quicklink.

It's nice if you prefer to remove your chain to clean it.

Those shimano replacement pins, that you have to use every time you break the chain, really blow.

Never tried Wipperman. They're pretty expensive though aren't they? Do they have a quick-link?

I used Shimano HG53 and never had a problem. You can find them online for 10-15 dollars plus shipping or in a shop for 20.

My current chain is a Dura Ace. It's shinier and cost $35. The shop was out of the other ones and I wanted one that day. I like the shine but it's still just a chain.

SRAM for the quick link. If you like to keep the drivetrain ridiculously clean, you'll thank yourself.

I always thought the best chain out there used to be made by Rohloff. Does that chain still exist and being sold? I simply remember it as expensive but well worth every single penny...

Wippermann Connex 908 chain. ~$35-40 and comes with the quicklink. I have yet to use it, but i've got 2 of them at home waiting to be installed along with a bunch of extra quicklinks (to keep in my saddle pouch just in case). :)

They still make/offer 8 and 9-speed chains. Only the 9-speed chains are available in the states...although you really have to look to find somebody that sells them or is willing to special order it for you. For Rohloff 8-speed chains, you have to order either from Europe or Australia (prices and shipping is cheaper from Australia).

I've got a Wipperman 10 speed chain and really like it. It was noisy at first but now is very smooth and quiet after breaking in.

Nice to have the Connex links to remove the chain for cleaning.
