It's only a matter of time...You people just don't realize the power of advertising to influence public sentiment. This commercial is a good example of trying to inflame society's anti-cyclist hatred. First, State Farm does it, now IHOP. Where will it end? Cyclists in boxcars, mark my words.
And he brings out the Nazis on the first page! There goes the enlightened discussion that this thread was having.
I prefer to call it Freedom Toast.

Okay, point made. I was merely making fun of the crap I see all the time in A&S where some cyclist makes a schizophrenic meta-narrative out of a harmless piece of advertising, like the State Farm commercial. "Advocacy" for me does not include being a perpetually offended whiner.
I think your attempt at being ironic kinda backfired on ya bro. Nobody responded the way you thought they would. Kinda seems like the joke's on you.
Now THAT'S irony.

We got a few laughs at the expense of those who spend all their time whining in A&S, Commuting and Living Car-free, so it wasn't a total loss. Those who are familiar with these forums with a brain and a sense of humor found this thread hilarious. ;)

Familiar with A&S, Living Car Free and Commuting AND have a brain AND a sense of humor? Diogenes had an easier task finding the right kind of people and he had a lantern.

I suspect the Serious whiners and enthusiastic serial victims of the mean ole world responsed exactly the way the OP intended. That they would take the OP's "outrage" seriously shows how far gone they really are.
The joke's on them. Seriously!

Except most people didn't actually do that. If they were outraged they didn't post it. Which means some people may have misjudged peoples whineyness.
I am getting pretty damn sick of the elitist attitudes running around here, and I am pretty new, so It didn't take long. I find people who seem to have nothing but contempt for opinions other than their own more obnoxious than people who are overly sensitive about commercials.
Don't get me wrong, I find whining on these forums to be a problem. But at least they are trying to be productive, even if in a misguided manner. This thread makes no genuine contribution, its just negativity.

How about you just blast through the local IHOP like on the commercial - then claim you were influenced by the commercial?
LOL soon after seeing the commercial I got the stuffed French Toast with strawberries on top, causing me to me to blast: but not in IHOP

Dude, you gotta switch to decaf. I don't know what you are on, but it is way to much or not enough. If you would mellow out the world would seem a much brighter place and you find that people are a whole lot less hostile that your warped reality is telling you.
Nobody cares what IHOP does in their silly commercials any more than it really matters how the insurance agencies show cyclists (or cave men). Don't waste your time, energy and karma on matters that don't matter and focus of positively changing society by positively advocating for your cause through positive reinforcement.

It's perfectly fine to talk about how we're portrayed in the media. Any one commercial isn't likely to make a significant difference, but media portrayals do matter. Further, criticism isn't whining just because you disagree with it.
All that said, I think this ad was perfectly fine. For better or worse, it showed cyclists just like everyone else--wanting our food in a hurry and getting it. It also gives us an excuse to take our bikes into an IHOP with us. I can easily see an IHOP being a good destination for an early morning weekend group ride.

I just saw a commercial for IHOP's "Tour de French Toast" promotion, and right in the middle of a peaceful dining scene, some roadie cyclists blast through the restaurant, almost running over one of the customers! I recommend we all e-mail IHOP to express our displeasure at being portrayed in this manner.
I just saw the commercial and I have no problems with it. The way they came cycling through, my first impression was Tour De France, not some "roadie cyclists". The whole visual was too absurd to worry about.
There are other ads, like the State Farm ad where the fellow has been "reduced" to cycling, or another where a cyclist runs into a stopped car. Those I find offensive.
IHOP's commercial just makes me wonder if they are gonna field a team for next year's TdF, and get them amped on sugar and caffiene instead of steroids. ;)
OK. Here is a quick quiz. What do you see here?
underwear commercial?
