View Full Version : IHOP portrays cyclists as apathetic thugs!

I just saw a commercial for IHOP's "Tour de French Toast" promotion, and right in the middle of a peaceful dining scene, some roadie cyclists blast through the restaurant, almost running over one of the customers! I recommend we all e-mail IHOP to express our displeasure at being portrayed in this manner.
I don't eat there, anyway. If you write to them, I am sure they will respond that it is a harmless satire.

Having not seen it I'm not offended. Tour de French toast is a verbal take off on the Tour de France? It'd be no different than the an Indy 500 blasting a car through. Road cyclists do race and go fast.
By the way I've never considered pancakes loaded with whipped creme, and that slurry of glucose gel that the few bits of fruit are saturated in to to be an actual breakfast. Christ who would actually eat that for breakfast? They can't even make it look appetizing on TV - how good could it be when it arrives at the table? Every time I see an IHOP billboard or commercial I'm baffled at that.

I have seen the commercial and I really doubt that it is going to make anyone change there feelings that they have about cyclists. Love us or hate us. It is nothing but a silly commercial.

How about you just blast through the local IHOP like on the commercial - then claim you were influenced by the commercial?

It's only a matter of time...You people just don't realize the power of advertising to influence public sentiment. This commercial is a good example of trying to inflame society's anti-cyclist hatred. First, State Farm does it, now IHOP. Where will it end? Cyclists in boxcars, mark my words.

Offended??? I loved that commercial! :p
And what's wrong with IHOP pancakes/waffles? The more sugar the better!
I liked the commercial. It is also perfect for making the claim that I should be able to bring my cycle inside the next time.

I saw the commercial this morning. I've seen the other two adds that are discussed in this thread as well. There will always be companies airing adds that we feel to be offensive. There will always be adds that all groups of people find offensive. I say this: If you feel like the images in the IHOP add and Dunkin Donuts add offensive due to them portraying cyclists in a bad light you should go out on the road and do everything you can to reverse peoples perception of that portrayal.

Yeah, that!
I was going to post some smartypants quip about the commercial until I read your comment. Now, all I want to do is agree. Well-said!

^^^^This is where everyone should direct their complaints.
So you're saying I shouldn't blast through IHOP on my bike at 30mph?

I am thinking you should and snag the french toast off people's plates as you go... :D Of course, it will be only polite to shout out "Sorry folks, had to refuel!"
People in A&S are too senstive.

I just have one question. If I complain, will I get free pancakes?

Anytime some company makes a comercial that involves a bicycle in any way what so ever, someone on BF will offended. I have seen the comercial and thought it was kind of funny. I still don't eat at IHOP though because I don't like their food.

would it be legitimate to write to them and complain that their advertising has sparked annoying threads on BF?

Who goes to McIhop anyway? I think we're getting to be another group that's too easily offended.
Get yer flapjacks at your local breakfast joint. I've ridden many klicks to mine (Sweet Laurette's in Port Townsend.)

IHOP will be responsible for the next motorist-on-cyclist hostility. They obviously are part of the Bush Administration's conspiracy to eliminate all vehicles that do not run on fossil fuels. Follow the money, you'll see.

Right through the front door at speed... and expect to be served while moving apparently...

Only the serious cyclists are too sensitive! :)
I haven't seen the commercial...
It's very possible that cyclists really are terrifying to all the fat people at IHOP. Keep in mind, IHOP can guarantee that there will be someone in the restaurant fatter than you...they should print that on the menu, in fact.
Think of how unnerving you actually are to a bunch of slow moving fat people grazing at IHOP.

I rode by an IHOP the other night, and I could literally feel the beady eyes of all of those diabetic cagers inside watching me, filled with loathing, just as their masters commanded them. Nothing good will come of this.

That wasn't them you were feeling...it was me. They wouldn't give me those free pancakes and I was seriously considering eating you...with a little maple syrup of course.

Okay, point made. I was merely making fun of the crap I see all the time in A&S where some cyclist makes a schizophrenic meta-narrative out of a harmless piece of advertising, like the State Farm commercial. "Advocacy" for me does not include being a perpetually offended whiner.

Why are you even watching TV to witness a commercial? Get out and ride, man!
Seriously, though, it's just a commercial. It'd be no different it it were the "Running of the Pancakes" with bulls or, as another poster said, "500 Pancakes" with Indy 500 cars. Chill out and let it go.
I guess you didn't get the response you wished for in your other anti IHOP thread. They most likely made a commercial about you from the likes of your last thread . Maybe a fork to the head. I'm sure there is a medical term for you.

My thought exactly. Well, almost exactly. I haven't been to an IHOP in years.
I saw the commercial, and it didn't bug me at all. If it had any cycling-related message, it's that cyclists were welcome at IHOP. And I like seeing a business advertising that cyclists can get quick service.
