Commuting - My new commuter.

After a night of deliberating, I couldn't imagine riding to work on my stumpjumper full suspension bike so I picked up a scott sportster p4 today. I got it for the same price I sold my specialized langster for so aside from upgrading the tires, I evened out.

Chopped the bars down by 4" in width, the shifters barely made it without touching each other. Replaced the semi-knobby 700x37 continential double fighter's with 700x32 panaracer t-serv slicks. And popped on some SPD's.

A tiny 50mm of lockable suspension to take the edge off my broken hand for the next 2 months while it heals and I can always pop the knobbies back on for the trail if I need to.

you should be to work before you wake up on that thing. It looks that fast.

Ironically that's how I usually end up crashing, asleep on the bike lol.

So while you're hand's been healing, you've re-stocked your bike pile. I'd have kept the Langster though. That thing was stupid light.

I would've kept the langster too but here's my problem, I live in a tiny 1 bedroom, more of like a large studio actually and between the 2 of us, we had:
1. My litespeed
2. My stumpjumper fsr
3. My langster
4. Her allez
5. Her hardrock
6. Her fixie

and now my P4. Really, 7 bikes was pushing it, the langster was fun and all but I couldn't really bunny hop big stuff and to hit 28-30mph, I had to spin like crazy, slowing down was always a problem, plus it wasn't too comfortable over broken pavement. So I had my fun and sold the thing. She's also getting rid of her fixie since she's not riding that anymore. So we're down to just 4 bikes and the P4's staying in the shed outside as to not clutter the apartment.

The langster was a little under 15 lbs and absolutely flew up hills like it was made of helium. I think the P4's somewhere just north of 28 lbs.

So this is a 29'er? I've never heard of the brand before. So riding on the cut down bars is pretty close to riding on the hoods of some drop bars I gather?

Ya know... this is a helluva way to console yourself about the broken hand.... :D

It's a 700c wheel, which I think is the same type of rim as a 29er. I know I can pop my road bike wheelset on this and it'll work. Sometime in the future I was gonna snag a pair of cheap ebay road wheels and put the knobbies on to swap it around for light trail riding.

My roadbike hoods are 400mm, and I've got these chopped down to 420mm right now. The seat and bar position's also adjusted to mimic that of my road bike so I can train a lot of miles on these and not feel weird on the road bike. To be honest I'd rather be in shape to ride the track bike, it was a lot of fun, but at least this is more practical for me. Plus its plush enough for me to ride while letting my hand heal.

Hmmm... do I see disc tabs front and rear? That's a good future upgrade if you plan to ride in Winter slush.

Yeah they have a disc only version for like, literally twice the price. This is a dry weather bike only, I used to ride in the rain year round but I'd rather stay clean now.

These new style handlebar grips with the flat section - have people here found them better than the traditional round variety?

yeah, i got rid of my fuji track pro a while ago for those exact reasons. coasting was always sorely missed.

yeah, that was my original plan... but i find it hard to get there regularly enough to make use of the track. slvoid would probably have done well at the track, but i'm sure i would get smoked out there.

i'm happy enough just doing a few laps once a year at the NY century tour. :)

slvoid - Mind if I ask who makes the grips that you've installed? I like the looks of those more than my Ergon grips. I wouldn't mind picking up a pair. Thanks!

They're WTB comfort grips. I have ergon grips on my mtb and I actually just replaced the WTB grips on my commuter with a pair of ergon grips as well since i wanted bar ends. The WTB's are going on my girlfriend's mountain bike since she's always liked the ergonomic grips.
