I guess in Hong Kong, you're limited to the amount of runway space you get (http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=22.312523,114.20773&jsv=107&ie=UTF8&ll=22.313833,114.205713&spn=0.030451,0.059395&t=k&z=15). I've read they stopped making runways, for the most part, that have two different approaches because newer and larger aircraft aren't as vulnerable to crosswinds as older, smaller aircraft, but in Hong Kong, space is at a premium.

Looks like that's definitely true at this airport. Not only can you see as the plane touches down there's no room for a perpendicular runway, but the crew had to make that tight turn probably only about a mile out due to the hills.
