After weeks of collecting and hording parts, trying to do things myself and having Psimet re-show me how to do things. My frst build is complete and ready to roll in New Glarus. Here she is, the white tape was all I had, black will be coming soon.
It's a late 90's Pinarello steel cross bike built as a roadie. The frame came from ebay and the front fork had already been changed to the Winwood carbon that sinstalled. Campy Veloce compact crank, Veloce components. Campy Proton wheels. Michelin PR2's, No name carbon bottle cages (ebay specials) Thomson seat post (thanks Mr. Mavic) an ebay San Marco saddle. Cane Creek cantilever brakes. Psimet and I finished running the cables last night and I finished the little stuff after getting home. I SUCK at wrapping bar tape. I guess practice makes perfect.
Heading out to the trail in about an hour for its first real ride.
I owe Psimet a HUGE debt of gratitude and see him drinking lots of beer on me in New Glarus:D:D:D

Nice! I love the color and, call me crazy, I like the white bar tape. Hopefully I'll make it to the New Glarus ride to see it in person!

Another vote for keeping the white bar tape. It gives it just that perfect offset to all the black in the stem, seatpost, saddle, fork, etc.
Beautiful bike!

...no you don't. All I did was provide a place to put it together, and some conversation to ensure it took a lot longer than it should have.
It's an awesome bike. I want to know how it rides. BTW - think about all the bolts you need to check tightness on that first time you go down a big hill. :D
I think it will quickly become your favorite rig.

Rode 17+ miles today cause I didnt have much time available but was dying to get out on it. Rode North from Voyagers landing to Algonquin. 1st impression was wow is it smooth. That ultra torque crank was really nice. Doesnt seem any slower than my Aluminum Pinarello and rides really nice on the trail. Put the compact to the test on the big hill in Algonquin behind the old post office. Went up the hill easily (for me) and never got close to the granny gear. Thought about the whole loose nut thing as I was coming back down that hill at 33mph, but everythig held together nicely.
Frame is slightly bigger than my other but I like that as this allows me to be a little more upright and go to the drops without so much discomfort. I'm sure an expert bike fitter wouldnt set it up this way but I really liked it. Saddle may need to change, but Ive got an Alias enroute from ebay.
Bike felt really solid and smooth, I can see this becoming my favorite ride. Gonna have a hard time splaining that to the wife as I told her this was "just" gonna be my commuter.
Oh well, I'm up for the battle.
Bring on New Glarus!!

I, too, love the white tape! Nicely done :) Had to laugh at "Thought about the whole loose nut thing " Glad everything held together well!

Well, if its a rule, then I must obey. So far my wife is the only one who didnt like the tape and what does she know? The only thing she has good taste in is men:D

I have yet to ride on a steel frame, from what i sound its very solid and cruises well. Looks like a sweet rig!
