I went to the Waffle House last night during the 3AM rush after the bars close and when I put my bike in the booth across from me, she told me I couldn't bring it inside. I don't carry a lock, and i certainly don't want some cager hillbilly stealing my bike, so I said:

"Don't you know I'm saving the planet?" barely controlling my anger. Then she threatened to call the cops. All cyclists should boycott Waffle House until she apologizes to me and/or gives me a free pecan waffle. I bet she voted for Bush, stupid *****.

You forgot to tell her IHOP lets cyclists race through the restaurant.

Pretty soon you won't have any place left to eat!

There is always the free samples, or what ever you can snack on and put back on the shelf (or steal) at Walmart!

The local Walmart lets me park my bike even closer to the entrance than the disabled get in the segregated handicapped zone and fatsos in their land barges idling near the front door.

For shame!

They must have better free samples at Hyvee, no?

Yeah HyVee samples are better and that is where my wife does most of our food shopping but it doesn't have my favorite lead painted toys to gnaw on, and besides, the OP has a thing for Walmart.

I remember Hyvee from when I lived in Pella, waaay better than Walmart. ;)

I wish we had Waffle Houses up north. Gotta get down around I-70 before they start showing up every three feet.

Why do you hate breakfast?

I love breakfast, that's what I was trying to get at the Waffle House. Can you possibly think of one good reason a restaurant would have for not wanting a bicycle inside when they are extremely busy? I mean, I'm saving the planet, unlike those drunk cager toerags that were tripping over my Long Haul Trucker.

If you're helping to save the planet, you should be offered free food wherever you go, anyway, to offset the carbon you aren't dumping into the atmosphere. People who disagree with me are wrong. My bike should be able to accompany me anywhere because it is symbolic of how I am saving the earth.

Kris, doesn't your bike have one of these on the downtube? You'd have gotten gratis grits if so.

They are brainwashed by TV advertising!! Otherwise they would be in the streets cheering us along and showering us with chocolates and flowers.

Maybe they were concerned that a passing motorist, unable to repress their anti-cyclist rage, would crash through the wall of the restaurant in an attempt to destroy the bicycle...?

I definitely agree about free food though... we need more threads about this subject.

Hey, I feel like you are perhaps mocking me, a person who is a Car-Free Planet Warrior. This is not the thread for sarcasm, friend.

There is never room for the mocking of free food!!!

Fight on mighty warrior!

That's right, the Quest for free food is the true mark of a Serious Cyclist. Free Beer and Pizza on demand for Righteous Cycling Crusaders is the Holy Grail; any Real Cyclist would know this.

I bring my bike inside bars/liquor stores, etc all the time - but I first ask them and then I just nudge it inside the door - at 3 am I wouldn't even lock my bike outside any place around here. And if they say no way, then I move on.

<ducks & runs> :)

Never ate at a waffle house (or an IHOP or it's long old version either) - is waffle house where they serve fried chicken and waffles and where you pour maple syrup over all? I've had some guys from TX tell about this decadent plate!

Appreciate what? Oh, you probably think that somehow you riding a bike will "save" the Earth. So that mean you can take your bike wherever you wish? Placing your dirty, greasy bike in their booths? Yeah, ok.

All I can say is that for a First World nation, you all are sure uncivilized. I was on a bike tour and very stinky (and HUNGERY) like is expected on such a thing and stopped at a 5 star hotel / restaurant here in Costa Rica [ Tabacon in La Fortuna if you are curious ] - Oh, wet too, I had been riding through some rainshowers.

I asked if I could bring my bike into the restaurant while I ate (it is a very nice bike) - they said they really couldn't let me, but if I would like, I could bring it over to the guard station and they would put it in the guard house with them and watch over it for me. :D

I did so, had a wonderful meal and a good chat with the waiter, and after refueling, got my bike from the guards (I was slightly disappointed they didn't wash and grease it for me - I wouldn't have been surprised - honest!) and resumed my trip.

The above is true and not exagerated - oh, and I did tip the security guys.

Now, can you imagine how I feel when I visit the USA and hit stores that don't seem to understand I am a customer and what that means? My wife is always putting her hand on my arm saying things like "Now, don't yell at them..."

Oh, Tabacon did place me downwind from the other customers I did notice... :D

At least you showed self-restraint in not asking to take your bike into the hot springs. Had you done that you may well have been shown the exit...

Okay, my point is made. For those that did not catch it, I merely made a tongue-in-cheek thread poking fun at the bizarre sense of entitlement and disregard for others I see on this subforum, as well as Commuting and Living Car-Free. You could replace the words "Waffle House" for bank, grocery store, lecture hall, etcetera, and you'd have the type of thread that shows up once or twice a week in A&S. The point being made to fellow cyclists:

Get your heads out of your collective asses.

I was pleasantly surprised there were not more people who agreed with me, although I was being a little over the top, but from now on, when I see a numbskull thread where somebody is whining because they weren't allowed to bring their bicycle into ______, I'm just going to link to this thread.
