Your fan on the Trek Daddy Yo-yo copy made my commute go so much nicer.
Lemme explain:
I was on the commute to work yesterday faced with a 16mph headwind. The rail to trail i use had a rail gang on the rails next to the trail, so I stopped to take pics to post. This dude on a Trek rolls by I nod, and finish the shoot then continue on.
Well I catch the guy, it's a good head wind, and we are both struggling, I'm on my FG 48x17. I really couldn't believe I caught the guy. So, having some cahones, I pass with an "I'll pull." Dude never moved. We were moving at 14-16 mph, and I waited, and he kept falling backwards. So I shrugged it off shook my head and leaned into the wind some more. About a mile later dude catches me and decides to pass me, which I'm happy to let happen cause it means someone will block the wind for me. So I hung with him, sucked his wheel. It made him nervous. I backed off, he slowed, so I took the lead again, well dude must have thought that being bested by a Schwinn World Sport FG, riden by a guy with a Camelback too much and he came along side of me. The stretch of bike path he made this move on was in the shade with a sheet of ice. He got nervous, and I pulled out ahead. Again this was too much for the OCR rider, and he cranked for the lead, so I shrugged let him have it and sucked his wheel, well dude got down right indignant, and poured it on. I just laughed to myself, thinking "Dude, are you stupid? You're making my job 30% easier, and I'll hang back here till you crack." I wanted to tell him this wasn't a race.
Then we hit the part of the bike path that rips legs off of FG, a section of rollers, and if you are on a geared bike you will drop me, and he did. I hung back to watch if he was turning on the route I take to work, he went straight and I went right.
But I wanna thank you LA, cause your guy made that headwind a great story, and cut my commute time down cause we were doing some 20-21 speeds into that wind. I don't know what would have been the out come had I followed dude, and hung on his wheel, maybe I'll get the chance. I am sure he's telling this story in a different light, of beating this old guy on a beatup Schwinn that thought he had some game. But, as I have learned out on the streets, it is easy to race someone who doesn't know it's a race.
