A small LBS apparently still has one of these in my size. They want $850 for it. Is it worth it? I'm thinking this might be a good alternative to converting my Breezer. My commute is currently about 15 miles each way by bike. What is the maintenance like on these? Life expectancy?

Hell yes! Jump on it. It is the best e bike ever made (saying it is the older bottom bracket motor version, if it is the hub motor version the price is about retail).
I have one that has well over ten thousand miles on the frame and a XtraCycle kit, I haul large loads (100+ pounds) regularly. The motor has not complained once.
25 mile range without a load, 18ish with one. A second battery or topping up at work and you will not have problems with range.
It's the same as this one. They are holding it for me until I can get there to look at it.
