Commuting - Planet Bike Cascadia ATB 60mm fenders

I know nothing about fenders...

What do you all think of these:

I have them on my LHT, love them. They get me excited to ride through puddles.

I have a pair of them on my snow bike and on my Big Dummy, plus a pair of the smaller ones on my commuting bike. Much better mud flaps than what comes on the Hardcores. They also include spacers for mounting them on disc brake equipped bikes.

I've got those same fenders on my hybrid (althought mine might be a little narrower) and the coverage is excellent. It has to really be pouring for any road spray to get around the sides of them.
It took me a little while to get them installed, but I haven't had to touch them since.

Go for it. I've been very happy with mine. Of course, you still get some atomized spray out the sides. And it's a good idea to level your pedals when hitting deep puddles. But yeah, they're excellent.

I bought a set of the "aluminum"(sandwiched inside clear plastic) Cascadia ATB's from BikeSomewhere through Amazon. They arrived just a few days ago, don't have them mounted yet- gonna have to re-route the front disc brake cable on my Trek SU200, it's wound through the fork & is in the way!:rolleyes: Once that's done they should almost fall on there. :D

The fenders & hardware all seem to be very well made, & the mud flaps especially look better than anything else I could find on the internet. IMO, for bike fenders you could do a lot worse than the Planet Bike Cascadias. Now if PB just had a chain guard...;)

I am totally a NOOB when it comes to fenders and the hardware involved, so I apologize ahead of time if this is a super-dumb question.

I'm looking at my rear fender right now. Nope, nothing from the factory- but if you can get a reflector(or better, a lightweight blinkie taillight) with a threaded stud for mounting, you could drill a hole high up on the rear mudflap- say, about 3/4 inch below the lower mudflap rivet. It's pretty thick there, & would probably hold a relfector or a lighweight taillight for a years with no trouble. Just an idea.

I was afraid the phrase "drill a hole" would follow my last post ;)

I am going to try to find a rack with a mount--otherwise, I will have to bust out my drill (I think I have one...).

I attached a SuperFlash to my Freddys with zip ties. I'll post a pic later. I pretty much just wrapped the ties back and forth around the fender mounts and through the light mount.

There are SuperFlash rack mounts, I think Planet Bike stopped making them, but you can find them for $5 or so online on places like Amazon, and you can mount one of those to your fender with zip ties in a similar way, so you can remove the SuperFlash. http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Bicycle-Light-Bracket/dp/B000WUC48E/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1208372118&sr=8-16 (The way I have mine on right now, I can't get it off without cutting it, and I'm afraid it's gonna get stolen. I just found that mount on Amazon by chance and am about to try that instead. Just hate to pay $4 to ship a $5 order., but I guess it's worth it if I avoid getting a $25 light stolen.)

Nope...you could add something yourself. Here is a blog post (http://thelazyrandonneur.blogspot.com/2008/03/thorn-sherpa-pb-cascadia-fender-install.html) about installing these fenders on my Thorn Sherpa.

BTW - you can see where I mount my PB Superflash on my seatpost.

Wow--that was a complicated install--PRECISELY why I am taking my bike to my LBS for fender installation. I just hope they do a decent job (I often have little faith). I will probably be riding 100% of the time with a rear basket or trunk, so I will have to figure out a way to attach a blinkie to an exposed portion of the bike.

Yeah, I don't know if you use PB SuperFlash, but these mounts are made for those. I just went ahead and ordered one - at $9.40 including shipping. But like I said, better than getting it stolen.

I don't have a good feeling about attaching a light to a plastic fender. I think it will shorten the life of the fender. This is just my gut feeling not something I'm presenting as fact.

If the seatpost doesn't work due to cargo on the rear rack I'd suggest attaching a light to your rack. One of the Planet Bike mounts for the Superflash is meant to attach to a seat stay. This narrow mount can easily be used on most racks with a bit of electrical tape used to make the rack the correct diameter. The resulting mounting point is uber secure and you can even add one on each side of your rack for the ultimate rear blinkie experience.

I've been running with a blinkie attached to a planet bike Hardcore fender by use of a handmade clamp for almost two years. No cracks or anyother sign of wear. If you study the photo you see it's clipped just just below the fender stays and above the mudflap which is attached to the fender by two rivets.

No drilling or riveting or alteration invoved - just zip ties wrapped around the fender mounts. When I get the PB mount, I'll attach that to the same mounts through the eyelets the same way. Then I'll be able to remove the light.

I have another light on the seatpost, and am getting a third for the trunk bag.

I stumbled across this guy's solution for a fender light mount which I thought was pretty clever:

Based upon that, I came up with my own solution. The PB Cascadia has a small gap between the fender and mudflap to insert a shim of plastic that's firm enough to support a Super Flash. Note the hole cut into the plastic for the belt clip. The light doesn't move around at all either horitzontally or vertically, and it cannot sink any lower into the mudflap as it appears to be sealed. The light isn't perfectly perpendicular to the road, but it's close:
