Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Dealing with real Trolls, not A.Troll.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

While a few of my earlier rantings towards a particular troll were very unsavory and violated most of the forum guidelines the goons are gone. (for now)
Real trolls are easy to spot. They are almost always newly registered members who start off with a controversial if not insulting thread. Or perhaps just agitating posts.
You can further recognize them by looking at all their posts and seeing a pattern of casual yet annoying/insulting remarks. Much like some of my own posts when I am in that monthly cycle. ;)
I encourage all forum members to help scan for these trolls and report them. Do not do what I did and end up on notice but do report these annoying little jerks. Joe and the other forum janitors do great jobs hosing out the crap.
My apologies to anyone who had the displeasure of reading some of my fine remarks in the last 24 hrs. I assure you all that I was merely making every effort to make an obvious troll feel very unwelcome. I did not wish to ruin anyones bike forum experience.
I'll be a good little boy now, until the next troll shows up ;)

I was already ugly. But I did succumb to the dark side for a while there.

The best thing to do is simply report them and move on. While telling them exactly what you think of them might make you feel better, the truth is, it just gives them what they want (i.e. responses).

I agree ... if the troll was around when you posted your responses then he saw that he succeeded in his quest to get attention and get someone on the boards frustrated, upset, angry, etc.
While it's hard at times to ignore these types of people, it's the best thing to do. Nothing will ruin their fun faster then being ignored.

Sam, I saw your original post and that jackas* needed someone to rip his heart out. Now I have a question for the mods, how do you keep someone like Mr Duk out? Can't he just delete his cookies and re-register?

George, depending on the user we have a few options.
1) Ban the username.
Con: The user can simply re-register.
2) Ban his IP range.
Con: A few other members in the trolls area may be banned as well. This wont work with dial up users or users with dynamic IPs.
3) Set global ignore. Nobody sees any of the trolls posts.
Con: If the troll logs out, or has a 2nd username, he can see that his posts dont show up.
4) Cant go into much detail, but this setting will show random errors to the troll. It looks like the site is having problems. Only one out of 50 page requests show up correct. User can not logout, post, reply, or do much on the forums. VERY FUN TO USE!
Cons - None! ;)
There are a few other things we can do, but rarely does it get to that point. We rarely have mroe then one troll a week hit the site. Chances are, you never relize they were on the forums. We have some good mods to clean up that stuff.
