"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Power Tap Go Figure #8

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've had a few head scratchers with the Power Tap, but this one was the oddest. On Saturday, I ride 45 miles, lots of hills. Get back here, download the file, and the Cadence is flat-lined halfway through the ride. Go to the bike, F around with the Ptap, ------ reading for Cadence. F with the magnet, positioning on the sensor, no Cadence. Re-visit the set-up screen to be sure head unit is set up right, no Cadence. Put the head unit on the TT bike, Cadence read out is normal, still dead on the Six13 road bike. Swap magnets, same result. Switch them back, same result. No C on the Six13, fine on the Six13 Slice TT bike.
I email Saris regarding this Sunday, they respond today, they shipped a new mounting kit. They ROCK.
So tonight I had swapped wheels on my Six13 road bike (I had the Zipp tubies on Sunday for the race and rode them today again), took it out for a test spin with the clinchers. Of course today the Cadence is normal, like it never was gone. Go figure. That's simply baffling. Computers are F'd. But you all know that already.
Looks like I get a mounting kit out of all this.

You didn't plug it in all the way on the head unit. I had the same problem and received a free mounting kit.

Incorrect. First thing I checked. Remember, this unit lost cadence MID RIDE. I re-plugged it SEVERAL times. No dice. I didn't TOUCH it since I threw in the towel on getting it to work Sunday either. Certainly not the issue. Could be a flakey connection, but not because I didn't plug it in right.

I've had a couple cadence sensors come and go. I finally just stopped putting them on the bikes and not caring about looking at cadence.

Do I have to have a Cadence sensor? Mine gives me Cadence but the data is a little odd sometimes. Dos it better if I get a sensor for it?

Go thru the menu options, set it for virtual cadence. I don't install the cadence pickup anymore either. The virtual cadence seems to be about as accurate as the pickup for me.

I found the virtual cadence fairly inaccurate. Cadence is useful in determining the optimal TT combination of HR/effort level/cadence to get the most watts you can crank.

Maybe so but because of the ******** PT head unit you can't view all of those things during the race. Who gives a crap about speed. I just don't get it..... HR, Power, Cadence and distance or time would be perfect....

You can view 3 rows of data at one time. If you want to do Power, HR, and Cadence, you can (with the bottom-most row being the "rotatable" one). At least, I think you can if I remember correctly.
I don't think you can do it with the buttons, rather you need the PowerAgent software (that comes with it) to change what the head unit shows by default.

I have mine on Avg Power, Speed and HR....sometimes I have it set on Time.....I use the interval mode so I can see the data for that interval.
I have about 600 miles on it so far so I am learning and collecting data....I did get a local coach to do a fitness test with me and he is giving me feedback for awhile.
So far I am liking it and it is working really well.

Works for me. I'm ******** too.
Actually I'm not looking at the cadence so much during a TT, more like looking at the cadence graph afterwards. I'd agree you should be able to see HR and cadence simultaneously. Actually I have another wireless bike computer on the bike that can show the cadence and I can have the HR displayed on the PT.
