Foo - I almost committed suicide by car tonight.

But I failed.

Never blast around kamakaze-like on your bike without lighting or reflectors at sundown when you are highly upset and your mind is at full throttle buzzing highly in the state of frustration. I should have learned the first time when I got hit by a car. I came close but I guess it wasn't my night.

Technically, you didn't almost commit suicide because suicide is a voilitional act. Merriam Webster defines suicide:

1 a: the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.

You nearly got yourself killed in a moment of recklessness, but rest assured, you did not come close to committing suicide.

yeah right? who in their common sense would try to commit suicide? if you are going to do it at least do it creatively such as from choking on a gummy bear

Most creative suicide I've heard was one using an ohmmeter which used a nine volt battery, mashing the fingers on the electrodes so hard that both sides broke the skin, and the relatively low amperage managed to stop the person's heart.

Probably urban legend, but autodarwinating from a 9 volt battery takes expertise.

No worries Siu. I've been trying to commit suicide by bike for over 40 years now and haven't succeeded yet, so I am a much bigger f up than you are. I'll really be ticked if you succeed before I do, young lady, so be careful out there! ;)

Have had a couple near misses myself (day or night WITH FULL LIGHTS) as I'm traveling fast - and caught up in a problem I'm rolling around and OH ****!

I know the feeling, similar experience last night.

I have a small rise on my circuit that ends at a 4 way intersection with 4 lanes going both ways. Coming down it into this intersection on a green is always anxious as there are cars making left and right turns, I usually will take a lane just to be more visible. Last night coming into the intersection at about 23mph all is good and just I get there the car in the left turn lane decides to make his left while another person is making a right into the lane I am riding in. Damn, I had to make an adjustment to go around the car making a left, behind him at the last second. I was able to keep the bike up and juke around, screaming at him at the top of my lungs at what a dumb sh.. he was. Thank god no cars were in my lane or it might have been very ugly.

I just wish people would notice cyclist, they just seem so oblivious, this was broad daylight.

Ironically I'd ridden for years with no lights and never had a problem (knock on wood). Last year I decided to start playing it safe(r) and put some modest little lights fore and aft (actually a small 15 year old halogen headlight and my rear blinkie, which I had been using off and on at my wife's insistence).

The very first night I rode home with both lights a limo cab hit me - I believe I posted the details here when it happened - very bizarre. I was lucky - it was a minor hit to the bike and I was fine. But thought I'd mention -

A. USE lights!

B. still ride as though you are invisible. (The cabbie told me he didn't see me - crazy - I had lights and we were the only two people in sight on a deserted WIDE street in a desolate industrial area).

Bad Bad Siu!

I thought you'd learned your lesson last time. Use lights or don't ride at night! *shakes head*

Glad to hear that you are OK though. Please be more careful riding home from work. Think how lonely your Moots will be if get clobbered by a car.

I usually don't ride at night at all.

I was just upset at something and went to let all of that pent up energy out in a positive way, rather than letting it stew inside.

I should know better than this and I thank you all for the light suggestions but honestly, my mind was so befuddled - that at the time, what was bothering me was all I could focus on.

If you need help, there are lots of different outlets. If you can't find any helplines in your area, just dial 911. They can assist in crisis situations and hopefully point you in the right direction.
