Introductions - Hi From SoCal / Folder rider
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello from the West SF Valley sprawl of So Calif!
I'm a mixed mode (bike+car) commuter, with a sum of somewhere over 4000 miles on all my bikes (two Dahon folders+an Xtracycle comfort bike conversion+an inherited RANS Stratus).
Wife and son also have foldies so we can all drive to social rides that would otherwise be beyond our range by public transit or biking it all the way. If you have a spouse and-or child or children who might not be as passionate about cycling, from my experience I find it sure helps to be able to single handedly get a car ready to go, loaded with 3 folding bikes, in 5 minutes.
My favorite bike (Dahon Speed TR, with the SRAM Dual Drive 3-speed internal gear hub + 8 speed rear derailleur) is starting to give me quizzical mechanical issues, but that's for another post.

That Dahon sounds like a really cool arrangement. The Bicycle Mechanics forum will have some people to help you sort out the quizzicalities.
Welcome to Bike Forums.

Hi there! Welcome!
Do you know about the Folder Charity Ride (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=395378)?

Hi OTH, are you 'OTH' because you are 100 years old, or are you talking about the next escapade you are going to perform on your folders?
Welcome to BF!

Wow, thanks for your welcomes! My fam and I will be at the charity ride leaving Union Station this Saturday, 9 AM. We're sold on foldies. I'm OTH because... well, 50 is the newest 30 and I'm over 50... because the biggest social rides in SoCalif (and beautiful Union Station) are on the other side of the Santa Monica Mountains from the SF Valley... and because it sure feels great to make it over any hill, be it Sepulveda, Cahuenga or the big 50...
Upsides to the SRAM "Dual Drive" combo of geared hub plus 8 speed derailleur on the Dahon Speed TR:
* Huge gear range (21 to 114 gear inches!)
* Big gear steps (33% jumps) on the hub gear
* Hub gear can be upshifetd without easing off pedal power
* Hub gear can be downshifted at a stoplight
I may have found a downside -- that if I ride it through a BB-deep flooded intersection then a month later degrease the cogs and chain, maybe I get a degreased hub gear too? I'll head for the Bicycle Mechanics forum on that one when I get the details composed.
BF looks to be an amazing resource because of you good folks who contribute so much meaningful info. Hope I can do my part in that respect.
Regards to all,

We'll discount the OTH because you're over 50--there's a forum here just for 50+ folks, and I think most of them would whack you with their canes if you called them 'over the hill' :D . But the rest of the OTH reasons sound good, so I'd stick with that part of the story!
There are a lot of helpful, friendly people on this board--a couple of meanies, too, but they are far outweighed by the nice folks.
