I bought a purple Electra Townie for my dear wife; that ran about 1/3 of our rebate (family of five here!). She actually goes places by bike now; it's a beautiful thing.

I only got $300 worth of stimulus because I only worked for half of last year before starting college. I looked at my budget and I spend $50/mo in gas, $80 or so a pop every time I get a tune-up, the gigantic pain in the rear to inspect and register my car every year, and ponied up $140 in unplanned car repairs just this month.

My new Townie cost me about $500-$600 or so with all the stuff I had or will soon put on it. After my first week of riding I have decided to sell my car after my 4th of July visit home. KBB.com puts the Private Party Value of my '97 Taurus (that I waste so much driving alone every day) at $1500. I won't be paying $50/mo in car insurance after July. Driving a bike forces me to seriously consider whether I need what I'm about to purchase and haul home...

I never liked driving a car anyway. I think it all evens out.
