just poor craftsmen. But I am happy to say we have great ones. Just wanted to share what our craftsmen just made. When we first told them to use these pieces, they thought we were certifiable (crazy Gringos!) - but now they are totally sold!
What do you think?

What kind of wood is that on the sides? It is gorgeous.
BTW, I think it is a very nice box. I love hand made wooden articles, especially ones made from wood with character.

Of course there is no bad wood. Except maybe when you're in 7th grade and they're embarrassingly spontaneous.
Cool box.
Even nicer. That would sell for $100 plus at the Art/Craft shows up here.

And a very interesting bowl - out of wood that no one uses for bowls.

It is all in the name - yes, these are wood with character. Many people here would just burn them instead of doing this. It has been a real eye-opener for them to see how it looks when finished.

I do believe it is mitered with wedges - but I am anything but technical when it comes to wood.
That depends on how much is in my wallet. Right now, I am worth about........................ $ 37.
I have $42 in my wallet, but it will cost you at least $5.00 to have my body hauled off.

Actually here it would be free, but you would have to be bagged separately and clearly distinguished from the recyclables.

If someone is cutting wood - you throw out all of these pieces. No one wants to buy wood with defects - and these are considered defects.
The reason is automation. Craftsmen can use scrap pieces, machinary only runs fast when everything is uniform.
This is why most pieces of furniture you see is frankly boring - no highly figured grain, etc. But, we want to use all the wood, so we have this part of the business too. It means there is no wood wasted.

Yep, egg yolk. Very pretty and very hard. A great wood. I am trying to find seeds. This is from salvaged wood.

We make doors, cabinets, chairs, tables, beds, moldings, you name it. But, that produces lots of scraps - so we are using the scraps to make boxes, etc. Also, when you harvest a tree, you have a stump to deal with - well, that is the best possible stuff for turning bowls and such.
There is only one problem. I have always thought that when I was older I would learn how to work with wood - but now we have 8 full-time people and there is no room for an incompetant ole software developer...
Maybe I can sneak in at night...

I fear you would be right. I am have really no ability - nor design ideas. These designs came from my wife, who is an artist. She has a great eye for color combinations and such - and now she has an entire group of people to make what she envisions.

Soooo...how much for one? I like pretty boxes. Can your wife design a himitsubako? Like here (http://www.puzzleboxworld.com/) or here (http://www.pandoraspuzzleboxes.com/)? I would totally buy some and possibly be open to be a distributor here.

This bowl is made from balsamo - it was formed with, I kid you not, a chainsaw.
Look at the size of it - the rule is to help see.

Sure, she could. We tend to go for the market that is not like most people are doing - and you see a lot of the puzzle boxes here. We do have a USA distributor, all of this stuff is getting ready (except my armadillo!) for a 40 foot container.
If you would like, I could have you contact our USA distributor - depending how much you would want - we could talk directly but we are more than a little backlogged.
Our prices are pretty competitive - but I honestly have no idea.

Yeah, they are very cute - and now he is making toads... would you believe the guy who makes them is our head of construction?! But he has such an eye.
This is what we make a lot of - we have one client here that takes 100 a month.

That would be Spanish Cedar - or Cedro Amargo if you want to get exact. It is the same family as Mahogany.
That is a natural finish

Yep - there sure are I definitely am not one of them. Thankfully I am the owner or they would probably fire me...
Well, at least I have a talent at making businesses run well in a foreign culture in a foreign language - so I don't feel totally worthless. But there is something about seeing such wonderful stuff and wishing I could do it, and knowing there is no way in the world that I could.
Oh well, maybe if I look pathetic enough with Bambi eyes someone will make me one...

Crtreedude, I've said it before and I'll say it again. You've got one of the true dream jobs in this world ... and dream locations.
Your workers created some very nice wooden art boxes. BTW, do you happen to know what type of insect created the holes in the first box? Or is it the natural way for the tree to grow?

Probably some kind of beetle is my guess or ant. We have a wood here called tempisque that it is very common to see 1/4 holes through - what is surprising is you can barely cut the stuff.
I hate to say it, you are right. But, someone has to do it, don't they? :D It is a lot of work, I won't kid you and there are times it isn't completely fun, but it is very rewarding.

Spanish Cedar is a wonderful wood to work with. It isn't too hard, but works really well with tools - and very, very stable.

Treedude, what is it exactly that you do? Do you know anything about the guitar industry? They are now trying out all sorts of woods, now that some of the traditional woods are disappearing. Brazilian Rosewood is done, I think Honduran Mahogany is almost done. Do you know if woods from Costa Rica are being used for guitars?
crtreedude

Spanish Cedar is considered excellent for quitars. You are correct about the woods disappearing.
We have plantations of wood - more than 500 acres now. We have by the way 4,000+ mahogany planted - honduran and, better yet, cuban. About 40 other types of trees too. People buy trees with us as an investment - and we harvest their trees and make neat things out them - and of course pay the owners for their wood.
We have planted more than 80,000 trees so far - and there is 35,000 more ready to plant this year. At least my wood shop won't run out of wood...
I am interested in getting into the business of making musical instruments. It fits well into our market.

It's weird about that first picture. My grandpa got a box that has a striking resemblance to that in the Philippines when they came and took it back over 60 some years ago. He bought it for something like 50 cents.
