ive been playing around w/ the idea of building a fixed or freewheel single speed bike and some one suggested that i build a cyclocross single speed and i decided to go w/ a single freewheel and sence most of my riding will be on eather dirt or limestone paths i was told the cyclocross would be best. now heres my problem that shouldnt even exsist i dont have hardly a clue where to get started and i work at a bike shop. so that beign said i have a good selection of used bikes newer and older at my desposile but i dont realy have on eye for what to use a guy i work w/ did tel me that he used a hybrid frame fo his singlecross i guess what will help me the best is if any one out htere has built something like this what did you use and ill try to figure out the rest from there i am also wondering if its possible to switch from fixed to freewheel quickly so i can ride freewheel to the path then lock the rear hub for riding on the path thanks

Just buy a flip flop hub, put a freewheel on one side and a fixed cog on the other. Then find an ebb frame and run it with a quick release hub so you can change it immediately you need to.

If you don't fancy the convenience and simplicity of that then there're frames with either sliding drop outs or horizontal dropouts or track ends but they're, in my opinion, P.I.T.A.es, especially for trying to do any adjustments quickly.

Phil wood make many different hub options including fixed/freewheel - http://www.philwood.com/Spechighflangehubs.htm . There are other options though.
