hey people, i'm going out tomorrow to get me a set of mechanical disc brakes. Not too entry-level, but not too advanced. Anyways, i'm wondering if the stock hubs on my diamondback need to be replaced in order for the brakes to be installed. if they do, will i need to buy a complete new wheel? or just an attachment part?

you need disc compatible hubs, frame, and fork. there is no attachment part for wheels.

There is a company that makes an adapter that attaches via spokes and some bolts.
Excuse me, I think its only spokes. http://www.firstprincipleseng.com/whatsnew_march62002.html

well, i know for a fact i have disc compatible forks and frame, its only the hubs im worried about
If you look at the hubs the right side should have a mount for the disc, if it does not you're hubs are not disc compatible. There is normaly 6 holes the discs bolt on to.
Now if you don't you can buy a new wheelset, or just replace the hubs and have the wheels rebuilt to your existing rims.. depending on how good a wheelset you have probably cheaper to buy a new wheelset.

Definitely better to go with a new wheelset. Check on-line at eBay, JensenUSA, Colorado Cyclist, etc. You can then sell your old brakes and wheels on eBay and recover a bit of money. You will even have a wheel box to ship them in.
I put on the Avid mechanicals last year and they are awesome. Very powerful and easily modulated.
