I just got a great deal on a road bike that I'm planning on turning into a fixed gear. The bike had a fresh coat of paint, no decals, but the seller at the swap told me it was a Schwinn. I was wondering if there's any way to confirm this and find out what model it is, tube set, etc. The serial no. on the under side of the BB reads E800155. It's lugged w/ horizontal dropouts. There are also two little screw holes on the left and right side of the head tube for the headtube badge.

Thanks.

Go to the Waterford Bike website (Waterford is owned and run by Richard Schwinn and is in the original Paramount factory in Waterford, WI). There is a good history of Schwinn, including all the relavent info on dating and serial numbers for Paramounts. If you have a Paramount, it is a great bike. I had Waterford repaint my '87 and rebuilt with a '00 Record 10-speed group. Have since converted it to a single speed.

Also, send Richard an e-mail. While slow, he generally responds and will provide information on the serial number.

E800155 sounds like May 1968, May 1978, or May 1988 production, under the 1959-1964 Schwinn Chicago serializing system, which was still used in Waterford and Greenville long after Chicago converted to the two-letter system in January 1965 = AA-----. (My June, 1988 top-of-the-line mountain bike has an F8---- S/N.)

Thanks for all your responses. I posted some pics that might help. Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't all that great.

I have had a Schwinn Paramount since the late 60's. It was bought from a man that wanted to loose weight and he weighed nearly 300 pounds!! It has direct drive and no pedal brakes with a Brooks saddle seat. 460 is stamped on the frame below the pedal axel chamber. I know the plant had a fire and destroyed this sequence of serial numbers, but I have always wondered approximately where 460 fell in relation to manfacture date. Can anyone help?
