Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Urgent Environmental Warning - Take Action Now

BEWARE OF DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE

Bikers frequently expose themselves deliberately to DHMO without being aware of the risks. Some bikers actually carry large quantities of this chemical, exposing themselves and their bikes to potential hazards.

The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta has stated that last year alone, 3,482 persons were killed when they continuously inhaled DHMO, and it is estimated that six times this number were hospitalized. Children in particular are susceptible. They have issued an informative booklet about the proper use of this chemical to avoid death and injury.

The wearing of bike helmets may cause decreased direct exposure to DHMO and may provide protection when DHMO assumes the solid form, but also may increase susceptibility to injury in certain situations, particularly when it circumvents the helmet and enters the eyes.

Wearing a bicycle helmet will NOT reduce the inhalation risk of DHMO. What a ridiculous article.

Anyone here know the basic naming sturcture of chemistry, I do :)

3,482 deaths oh what the heck why worry about it, I think I will go back to football. Hey I think I 'm thirsty ;)

Perhaps this should be moved to Advocacy and Safety, given the nature of the risks involved?

how is this problem at your altitude, Sr. Fox
?

DHMO problems are generally unrelated to altitude. However, I might say they are particularly prevalent at sea level near the ocean.

We have a HUGE problem with DHMO here in the Puget Sound Region, why somedays when I am riding there is no way to avoid inhaling it, especially in the winter months

Oh no. In Scotland we quite often have Dihydrogen monoxide falling from the clouds.

"Look to the skies" (sorry Kevin McCarthy)

I'll never leave the house again. I'll just buy in food and drink from the tap. But wait - I see a flaw in my plan.###

I've been in very close contact with this killer chemical
compound while diving, and other than a few cases
of Nitrogen Narcosis and one case of mal de mer I have'nt been adversely affected. I think this is overrated
as a biohazzard.
that said, maybe I'll switch to gatorade.

But did you inhale the DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE?

That is the most dangerous part!

Sounds like some good stuff... where can I score some? :D

There are people, even on this board, who would use web sites like this as a viable source of information and quote it in an arguement.. And when you question their source, they get bent out of shape..

No I didn't inhale (gee didn't our ex-president say the same thing?)
the Dihydrogen Monoxide. I did however have alot of skin exposure to
it, as a precaution against adverse reaction after the exposure I rinsed
thoroughly with warm water.
