We all might want to think twice before expressing our displeasure with cagers:

Man Assaults Bicyclist
Police say the suspect hit him in the head and threatened to kill him.

The 38-year-old man was assaulted near Walnut Street and First Street around 8 P.M.

The victim says he was riding his bike, when a van cut him off. He slapped the back window, to let the driver know he was there, and the driver got out, with a gun in his hand, hit the bicyclist in the head and threatened to kill him.

Police caught up with Nuvan Brown, 25, at Providence and Walnut. They arrested him on charges of 2nd Degree Assault and Armed Criminal Action. Wednesday morning he was being held at Boone County Jail on $24,500 bond.

Good thing the bicyclist wasn't a pu**y.

Joking aside, I'm glad the cyclist is ok, and they got the a**hole.

I'm also glad that the story does not seem unfair to the cyclist (often, I'd expect to hear that the cyclist assaulted or vandalized the van, or some nonsense, when it was just a slap)

Wow, scary story with a good ending. I agree zeytoun, the tone of this article is written more neutrally than usual. Probably helps that the cyclist and not the driver or police is the one quoted!

This story makes me reflect on how lucky I am to live in a country, Canada, where guns are not as prevalent as they are in the United States.

I wonder if there are many cyclists who are advocates for concealed weapons.

I suppose the few people who have guns in Canada would more likely use them instead of just threaten you with one....

Too bad for you!

Yes, I have seen posts to this forum by American cyclists who wonder what kind of pistol they should take along on tour.

I don't carry, but I would if I had a concealed weapons permit (and I was going on a tour where I would have to sleep in strange places..)

The crazies were for, and the sanies were crazy not to agree (if the criminals and the crazies are going to have guns, the sanies better too) :p

It's only a guess, but I'd say if he reacted that poorly to a simple slap, he probably cut the cyclist off on purpose in order to start a confrontation.

We've had several cases of road rage like that around here where the guy gets out of his car with a gun in his hand and the other person shoots him in self defense.

Probably helps that the cyclists didn't end up dead, too.

Who could disagree with the idea that it is safer for society if only criminals and government employees have guns?

My work has rule that no guns are allowed on the property. It makes me feel as safe as a student at Virgina Tech! :p

Well then, that's different. A $500 bodyshop bill is definitely worth attacking someone with a gun over.

The article clearly said he slapped the window anyway.

Had a similar experience as the referenced story, late last fall. Cruising on 44th street and some dip**** is a white mini-van whipped out of a parking lot in front of me. In my case I did my best to avoid him and managed to turn, but ended up slapping the van to keep myself upright and still dropped the bike. Dude got out of the van ready to swing, think he expected me to take off running, but damnit, I'm old, my boots are heavy, and I don't run far so I got ready for him. Once he saw I wasn't running he lost his nerve and jumped back in the van grumbling. One of those overweight shaved headed guys that mistakes weight for tough.

Agree on the gun control, I don't own a gun (choice) but I don't have any issues with them being available. I do agree with some kind of pre-purchase waiting period so somene doesn't run to the nearest gun shop and pick one up because they're pissed.
My view of gun control is that it will work as well as other laws. After all prostitution, theft, ****, drugs, robbery, b&e etc are all illegal, and they're completely eliminated right?

i would, slap my window and youre guaranteed to get shot i live in a nice neighborhood now but a window getting slapped in my old neighborhood was a matter of life and death. carjackers in my neighborhood used bicycles to make their moves

The only really effective gun control happens in the mind of the person weilding it. Using one on someone that merely slapped their vehicle is a distinct lack of control and it needs to be removed from his possession.

Then you're an idiot.

You could just drive on. Most motor vehicles can readily outdistance any bike, so I believe.

I slapped a white SUV's window once. It was a lady on a cell phone that just about put me in the ditch on the side of the road. She stopped in the road about 100 yards away. As I passed I saw her window coming down. I yelled something regarding how she needed to get closer next time because I didn't go into the ditch, and to hang up her phone. The rest of my ride all I could think about was how close she lived and if she was going to send some huge x-con husband to track me down. Now I just grit my teeth until it hurts.

Could have the story been biased in favour of the driver if the driver was white?

If this turns into a thread arguing pro/con carrying a gun, it's P&R bound.....

Just letting ya know ;)
