General Cycling Discussion - What's the point of Deep V Rims?

Yes hi hello. Question in the subject, wot.

I use them for durability. I've had several high end local shops build OP's for me and none would last more than 3500 miles. I had one guy build a set of Deep V's that lasted till I sold the bike, maybe 10,000 miles. I started building my own wheels with Deep V's. My wheels now have 13,000 miles without a budge after the initial retension period.

In 05 I did 23 centuries on them at 220 lbs and they are still perfect!:D...7300 miles that year, and 4,000 the next 2. Over a thou this year so far, no problems!:D

They are more aerodynamic than non-deep-V-rims. They can be a real hassle in a cross wind though.

One split on the braking surface!:eek: 2 cracked at the holes after they eyelets popped out. Most of all, they were noisey at the weld seam. That's not failing but drove me crazy. I might have been praying for them to fail.

Couple years later, a wheelbuilding bud of mine mentioned that Mavic had a problem with heat treating at one time. That might explain the splitting of the braking surface.:o

In my experience rims split at the seam when the braking surface has been worn down too much. Do you ride in the wet and muck with rim brakes?

How was the seam noisy? I've ridden on OPs for years and have never heard of a noisy seam.

Nope, not much rain here in Cali. On the inside of the rim at the seam is a small weld bead that is used to reinforce the seam. I've read it on several forums in noisey OP rims. It makes a ticking sound. Not sure about OP's of the present time but back in late 90's, they were very noisey. I have a bud that bought a set about 2 years ago, He said he hears the same noise, but I;m not sure in his case since I don't ride his bike!:D

Odd. I was just talking to the mechanic of the Latvian National Team about OP rims, and we both agree that they are great rims, very durable and they stay true.

I find they to be a great value, but to each their own! :)
