I would like to install the Avid Shorty 4 cantilever brakes and use non-road (like, Avid's for a V brake) levers because I would like to use a straight bar. Does anyone know why they are not compatible?
Or another lever manuf. that is compatible?

It's not the brand that is compatable. There are 2 types of flat bar brake levers one for canti's and ones for V brakes. They have a different amount of cable pull. Look for canti compatable levers, you will be glad that you did.
I think the Performance Forte levers have a little "switch" inside the handle that lets you choose between linear pull and cantilever. At least a pair I bought a few years ago did. Verify.
So do mine but, like you, I bought them a while ago.
I just bought also. The levers are switchable.
