On Sunday I raced in C Grade (U19 was merged with them) and...WON!!!

http://www.cyclingnz.co.nz/results.phtml?n=527

was a very tactical race.

We started off with U15/17 riders with us, and the U19 being moved into C grade for the day (lack or participants) so we had a decent bunch. It was 2 laps of a 9km course (yes i know, short!) with some hill climbing....not that steep but steep and long enough to put the pinch on them! first lap was good, I was in front a fair bit pushing the wind especially uphill...when I went to lap off I looked behind to find a snake behind me...! they wouldnt lap off!! but the guy behind was huffing and puffing and dripping sweat "hang in there mate, you're riding strong *huff puff*" so i kept going. On the back straight with a tail wind a couple of U17 riders bolted on the slight downgrade, but we reeled them back in with ease. On the second lap we came to the first hill and these 2 U17 riders bolted (small hill climbers!!) and thats the last we saw of them...but they were in a different grade so no worries!

Me and another guy were the only 2 pulling after that (lazy freeriders!!!!) and all was going good (my pull buddy had sweat dripping off his nose..was kinda funny!) then on the last straight before a left turn and the finish line I see 2 guys come screaming past on the wrong side of the road and im like NOOOOO!! and started sprinting, followed through the left turn and caught one of them before line. ohhhh second...gutted! but then I found out that the other guy was on a solo break from another grade and has passed us, and the guy I pipped at the line had jumped out of our bunch onto his wheel. SO in effect i came first for my grade :D and to think I was the youngest C grader there, on one of the cheapest and heaviest bikes...makes ya feel good!! yeah!

Congrats. One thing, though: never let the group make you pull the whole time, even if you're feeling strong, cuz there's going to be someone in there pulling a Lance, ready to take off when you waver. If everybody slows down when you pull off, fine; you'll have an easier recovery. Then, if someone goes off the front, you can just latch onto them and hopefully win in the sprint.

I unfortunately learned this the hard way. Some guy was sucking my wheel in a crit and wouldn't pull through, so I just let him sit there. When I finally told him to pull through, the jackhole sprinted on me. I caught his wheel, then refused to pull through as payback. We caught another guy on his team who latched on behind me, then almost immediately gave me crap about not taking a pull. I ended up turning and cussing him out about it as we passed the main bulk of spectators. Some people watching the race said I looked insanely pissed and were glad they couldn't hear what I said.

Well to be honest, I have set myself the goal of getting to the Olympics. I am not sure if I have what it takes physically, but I have the will to get there. I'm going to give it my best shot! Look for me Representing little ol New Zealand at the '08 and '12 olympics!

Well Today I raced again.... B grade this time...

SECOND!! YAY!! hehe I'll race B grade another couple of times then try out A grade.... fun aye!

I am going to focus on doing some interval training (been quite slack about this of late) to try and work on my sprint speed, as it came down to a sprint finish.

I am going to be doing a few hundred, maybe thousand kilometres of touring these coming school holidays, so that should put me in a good position for the coming year? yes? no?

Over and out,
Brendon
