On Sunday I raced in C Grade (U19 was merged with them) and...WON!!!
http://www.cyclingnz.co.nz/results.phtml?n=527
was a very tactical race.
We started off with U15/17 riders with us, and the U19 being moved into C grade for the day (lack or participants) so we had a decent bunch. It was 2 laps of a 9km course (yes i know, short!) with some hill climbing....not that steep but steep and long enough to put the pinch on them! first lap was good, I was in front a fair bit pushing the wind especially uphill...when I went to lap off I looked behind to find a snake behind me...! they wouldnt lap off!! but the guy behind was huffing and puffing and dripping sweat "hang in there mate, you're riding strong *huff puff*" so i kept going. On the back straight with a tail wind a couple of U17 riders bolted on the slight downgrade, but we reeled them back in with ease. On the second lap we came to the first hill and these 2 U17 riders bolted (small hill climbers!!) and thats the last we saw of them...but they were in a different grade so no worries!
Me and another guy were the only 2 pulling after that (lazy freeriders!!!!) and all was going good (my pull buddy had sweat dripping off his nose..was kinda funny!) then on the last straight before a left turn and the finish line I see 2 guys come screaming past on the wrong side of the road and im like NOOOOO!! and started sprinting, followed through the left turn and caught one of them before line. ohhhh second...gutted! but then I found out that the other guy was on a solo break from another grade and has passed us, and the guy I pipped at the line had jumped out of our bunch onto his wheel. SO in effect i came first for my grade :D and to think I was the youngest C grader there, on one of the cheapest and heaviest bikes...makes ya feel good!! yeah!
