this morning around 4:30 am the kid wakes up crying. something about her sock fell off? the wife is up handling it while i lay in bed trying to go back to sleep. i am almost there where i feel the bedroom shake? it did it twice. it was odd, but it was early and maybe i was just really sleepy.
reports i am hearing on the radio this morning seem to be indicating the midwest had an earthquake?!@? that is just crazy.

I diidn't feel it as I was driving my son to school just at that moment when the earthquake hit.
Yeah, you heard right, 4:40am I had to drop him off for a field trip.
So, since I was awake anyway I used that opportunity to squeeze in a 1h 30min bike ride before going to work :D Weather is gorgeous! Oh, and I got a nice 35mph draft from a rig starting from a traffic light. Breakin Away style ;)

Slept through it. Wouldn't be the first time.
I experienced a ton of earthquakes when I lived in Taiwan. Your brain always thinks they are something else when they start and it always takes me a second or two to figure out what they are.
As for sleeping through...I slept through a 5.something in Taiwan. When I woke up and the bed was about 6 inches from the wall and everyone in the house was running around asking if everyone was OK.
uh, i think here in Aurora we just had another one. like 2 minutes ago. the three story building i am in was shaking for about 20 seconds. am i the only one that did not get the memo about the world coming to an end. im not saying. im just saying. later.

I'm south of you, west of Joliet. I thought there was something too, because the lights and ceiling tiles in my office all kinda jostled a little bit - but then I thought it was probably just my mind "thinking earthquake," because a truck went by or something.

Actually it seem as if I was no a boat and a wave went underneath.
Did not feel the earlier occurrence, but many other reported via media outlets.

I have a BS in Geology, and am fully aware of the geologic hazards in our area - it's a piece of mind thing I knew I wanted to have when we built our house 3 years ago. If you really want, I could scan my homeowners policy to show you.
Tom Stormcrowe

I think what he's referring to is the probability that if the New Madrid cuts loose as badly as it did in 1811-12, your policy issuer will be bankrupted, along with every other insurer that issues earthquake policies. The population density and sheer number of seismically unreinforced masonry structures will do the companies in without a major federal bailout that I'm not sure the government could afford. Damage would be in the trillions.

Ah, I see -that seems to make more sense. At first I thought he was claiming I didn't have it.
The federal government helped out insurance companies after Katrina - didn't they? I'd expect they'd do the same here, were it to happen.
I read a report that said a 1811-12 New-Madrid type earthquake today would do about $160m damage, just to Louisville. Something as big as a 7.5 would have mass destruction all the way up to Chicago - where liquefaction could literally make the city sink into the lake.
EDIT: Here's an article about E-quake insurance in Kentucky that was written today:

They've been saying for twenty years now a 'big one' is due. Insured or not, virtually no one is, the scale of destruction would likely make it moot. Our Government's response has been less than re-assuring in disasters of late. Then again, most places substantially insulated from natural disasters aren't worth living in unless you have substantial means.

CNN was a little off when it indicated there had been no major quakes in the area. Just look up the new madrid 'quake in 1811. That one made the Earth ring like a bell. O heard something about a blocked spreading zone in the area.
The fabled "Big One" is expected to pass within 1500 feet of my home. 97% chance in next 30 years.

I have spent the last hour typing 3 versions of a response to this. I have stopped for one basic reason....my views would express a side of my political beliefs that most of you would not agree with.
Let me boil down what I am trying to say. If a major quake hit the upper midwest there would be a response. Money talks.

are we related? we could be. i mean, many families have the tall good looking kid and the not so tall and not so good looking kid .

as for the insurance issue. i have only been in the business for ten years. i know this much, if you live in the midwest AND have some type of EQ coverage you pay extra for it. no if and or butts about it. otherwise it is a standard exclusion of EVERY homeowners policy.
my thought is this that this is a close as you will ever get to using it. how much damage did you have again? later.

Oh yes, I do pay extra for it - I don't think there's any company out there that doesn't have earthquakes as an exclusion, as you have said. But, I don't think the price I pay is too high (less than the cost of an ultegra brake caliper per year) for the piece of mind to know it's there. After all, isn't that how insurance people sell so much - for the piece of mind to now that you're covered, "just incase?" If it were more expensive, I probably wouldn't carry it.
Back to my college days (I graduated in '02), I had more than one geology professor go off on a tangent about how anyone living in central/southern Illinois was a moron if they didn't have an EQ policy. That stayed with me.
^^^^ makes sense. well, only if you already have some fresh Ultegra brake calipers :).
wow, did anyone just feel that?
only kidding.
