Introductions - Guess that makes me the new guy

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi everyone! Name's Bozz. I'm active duty Air Force, and just recently decided to buy a bike for commuting to/from work. Don't ride currently, but (hopefully) changing that in a couple three weeks.

Hi Bozz, what do you do in the AF? My father was a pilot in the RAF, one brother was a mechanic at Beale, and one sister and her husband graduated from the AF Academy.
What bike are you looking at?
(Thanks for your service, too!).
Welcome to BF!

I'm a Medic, currently assigned to an Urgent Care Center/Ambulance Operations. It's a pretty sweet job.
Right now, I'm looking at the Gary Fisher Monona. I rode one the other day at a bike shop, and was very happy with the feel. I'll probably check out a few more models, but I've heard nothing but good about Gary Fisher bikes and the Fast City series. And it doesn't hurt that I grew up fishing and boating on lakes Mendota, Monona, and Wingra.

You should be happy with the Gary Fishers, but if I remember correctly, you might want to upgrade the rear derailleur if it's an Alivio. Do a search for 'Alivio', but I think a lot of people don't like that model of derailleur.

It looks like the Wingra has the Alivio derailleur in the back, so I should be good with the Monona.
Is there anything else I should think about upgrading from the get go?

A lot of people like to change the pedals. I'm not sure what's on there, but usually the stock pedals are heavy ankle maulers :( .

Anyone else have any input on upgrades?

Try asking this same question in the General Cycling forum--you should get a few more suggestions there.
