Road Bike Racing - One thing I forgot about racing in Amurka

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

it's not just a matter of fitting X amount of riders with X amount of bikes into your car.

these days, it's a matter of fitting X amount of riders with X2 amount of bikes into your car.

because i had family that was close to NYC, it used to be normal for me to hop the metro north, borrow my parents jeep wagoneer, drive down to the upper west side, collect 4 riders, and fit 5 bikes, plus baggage, into the car, then drive straight back to New England.

no mas.

Spare bikes? Why?

I bring spare bikes on occasion.

If you break a cable or bend a derailleur, a bike in the pits is a good thing.

In the 2005 Bethel Series finale, the co-promoter asked me why I brought a spare bike for the pits. I told him that if I broke a cable (or a housing blew out), bent a derailleur, or even broke a seat binder bolt (known to happen), I could hop on the spare bike and still be in the race. Shortly after the start HE broke his rear der cable. He did the whole race in either a 39x12 or a 53x12. He never questioned the spare bike thing again.

I didn't bring one this year because A - not enough room and B - don't have an identical bike to my primary.

I have some that I've never managed to get over my shoes. Plus when I'm about 1/3 of the way there I realize "Hey, how am I going to click the clicker on the shoes with these over them?"

Plus I really like the dress socks cut out for the pedals by that Junior (name escapes me). I think such things would be excellent, just spray the sock with some silicone waterproofing spray (even spray paint?) so it won't absorb moisture.

I went with two friends to Madera Stage Race last weekend. We had three bikes on the roof and three on a trunk of a Honda Accord. Needless to say we got some strange looks while driving. It also makes it a pain in the ass packing crap into a hotel room. We met somebody there so we had 4 people and 8 bikes in one hotel room

....although thats a far cry from our record of 9 people and 9 bikes in a Motel 6. You could fit more but it's a record that hope I never have to break.

...I love college.

Ach.. That makes sense.. I see a simple solution. Do not buy more than one road bike and use on aerobars.. Win.

This is the first year for me to have a TT bike so I will bringing it to the omniums and stage races. If it's a long way off and we want to try to save on gas I'd probably just use my clip ons. I always bring a pit bike to cross races but I'm even thinking about bagging that next year and just bringing a spare wheel set.
