Are there some better or worse roads to try to head South Across the IL border down to Riverwood?

I want to ride from Delafield, WI down to my in-laws on Sunday early AM. I am good with the Roads in Wisconsin but have no clue of the roads in IL. Working with Google Map it seems to be 45 is one of the few roads that heads mostly South. Is the traffic bad or shoulders non existent?

WTH, I thought I moved from the Chicago area to Texas 2.5 years ago...

There are some great routes up around Whitewater, but I never explored a route to get from that area back home, sorry.
