Southern California - Please be careful...

...about 2pm this afternoon on the Angeles Crest, maybe 1-2 miles above the lower ranger station, there was a 2 motorcycle accident in which one of the motorcyclists died at the scene. Those among us who use this route regularly have seen this time and again. I simply want to say be careful.

Sadly this is a weekly event during the hot months....

The saddest thing of all is that these deaths are preventable with some law enforcement. My experience on Mullholland last week at the Mullholland Challenge, and on Angeles Crest last year at the AC100, tells me that law enforcement turns a blind eye towards the insane behavior (of many), turning these amazing roads into an F1 or Gran Prix race course on weekends.

I must have been passed by 100 people doing twice the speed limit last weekend, and the same last October on AC, and there was not a cop in sight. They could pay down the national debt and save a few lives by putting a team on those roads to write tickets during the weekend. Hell I received a $ 380 ticket for running a red light on Sepulveda in Culver City last week and it sure as hell has me thinking twice. I can't imagine what a speeding ticket at +30-50 would cost the average motorcyclist or Porsche Driver, plus the points on their license and insurance.

Today (Friday) at around 5 pm I was waiting for the light at the NW corner of Los Felez and Riverside, where it enters Griffith Park, when a guy in a high end Mercedes roared by at better than 40MPH going south out of the park and making a right (west) on Los Felez AGAINST THE RED LIGHT! If I had not been aware of him and just trusted the light, I'd be a smudge on the road now.
Are there any cops or former cops on this forum? If so, I'd like to know why the police departments are always crying about lack of funding while money making opportunities like this one and ones mentioned earlier here abound? Perhaps we could pass laws that get the arresting officer's department a percentage of the ticket or fine?

High end Mercedes drivers qualify for vehicular immunity. Duh.

Cops are pointless on AC unless they're they're backed with helicopters or are working in large groups. Theres no way a cop on his CHP bike (not even Valentino Rossi) can catch anyone that goes past him at 80 mph on a street bike and doesn't slow down. I know tons of guys who hit the accelerator harder when they pass a cop knowing full well theres no chance they'll get caught.

I saw a motorcycle CHP on AC just South of Newcomb's last week (just beyond a "30 mph corner" sign.) He had a motorcyclist pulled over, and was writing him a ticket.

Is Stout still up there ? I thought he got thrown off motors last time he crossed the double yellow and went head on into a Jeep which luckily on broke his leg.

I was up there, and the same flatbed truck picked up both wrecks. They just through them on top of each other and tie them down. Were you riding up there today, Adam?
It was a lot quieter than last Saturday, last Saturday was nuts.

I rode little Tijunga to Wilson observatory, the descended AC into La Canada today - lots of debris from motorcycle wrecks lining the roads. Saw a CHP bike chasing speeders down. No incidents with motorcyclists today.

Pretty true but 80MPH?? They must have slowed down over the years or are you talking about the sharper turns? . ;)

Glad to hear there still is a CHP and some of them work the canyons. It's not the MC rider with a deathwish I care about, he/she makes the choice to ride recklessly. It's the innocent motorist who encounters one of these guys on the wrong side of the road and is injured or killed trying not to hit them.
Don't know what the current practice is, but formerly, CHP motor cops always traveled in pairs. With radio, it only takes two cops to catch these guys if they time it right.

Sometimes they do have cruisers up there, but I've only ever seen Stout by himself on the bike. Even if they had a pair of CHP on bikes, they would not risk their necks to do buck-thirty to try and match the speeds some of those guys do at 9 mile and the stretch toward mt. emma. To make matters worse, I've also seen someone knock down a pair of coronas at Newcombs before taking off on the GSXR1million.
