I'm a big fan of Eddy Merckx and while viewing his record setting attempt I noticed that he rubbed substance of some sort on his neck and nostrils. Looking at the comments below the clip some think its either holy water or maybe menthol. I could believe one or the other but would like to know what you guys think it is.

my guess would be that it was a mentholated substance like Vic's VapoRub, to keep his sinuses clear and open. But that's just a guess.

Exactly right. This was a common practice up through the 80s, at least.

Olbas oil. Still used today. You will see lots of guys using this stuff in the infield of any track race. I have used it to open up my sinuses before races during allergy season. Works great.

Studies have shown that the ofactory response to peppermint has significant endurance benefits. I used to drop some oil onto my gloves during races.

That and everyone and their mother's using those breathe right nose strips now.
