Hello fellow velophiles, I'm joining you from my home in Brooklyn, NY from which I commute by bike to my job in Manhattan. I've been riding for about 40 years since discovering the freedom while growing up in Wisconsin, riding the rural roads, riding to school, racing (strictly amateur) and bike-camping back then. These days my riding is mostly commuting and the annual organized events: the Five Borough Bike Ride (first Sunday in May) and the NYC Century (first Sunday in September). On weekends my wife and I try to get in some non-commuting miles around Brooklyn (down to Coney Island is a fave) and Long Island (the North Shore and Bethpage). I'm done with the racing because, well, I'm just not as fast as I used to be.
My favorite steed is "The Professor", my 1994 Trek 1220 road bike. During the cold months you'll find me riding the '94 Trek 850, an ATB I've converted to a commuter. I'm also considering getting a folder; I get nervous when I have to lock my bikes on the sidewalks and leave them unattended--I'd like to bring my ride inside. And on the trains and buses.
I'm a member of Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group in NYC that promotes biking, walking, and public transportation.
My mantra: Even a bad bike ride still beats a good subway ride any day.
