Test rode a BionX equipped mountain bike, a schwinn ebike, and ElecTrec bike. The Schwinn was the worse of the three and the BionX was in a class by itself. The dealer had a California only upgrade BionX 500 watt upgrade kit. Very impressive. He had it mounted on foldable mountain bike. I could care less about being able to fold it.

BionX is probably the best turnkey kit form going in USA/CAN. Get a frame you like - I wouldn't worry too much about gears since motoring more than make up for gears. 1-5 speeds are plenty IMO. Good brakes, rugged wheels/tires, lightweight components. I'm into comfort because with the electric motor I spend a lot more time riding - seat and posture become more important to me. Long distances to cover - go recumbent with assist.
There are other good "kits" out there too but you need to be technical minded to complete a nice build from them. BionX seems to take the worry out of the choices and offers simple, yet proven capabilities with their components.
The good news- motors/controllers are at a nice level of performance/efficiency while batteries keep getting better and better - whoopee!
What about the 500 watt kit? Do you have to live in California to get it? Will somebody in California ship one to Texa?
