Northern California - Random 305 super death?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just wanted to ask around here in the norcal section, since there are a few people who use Garmin products.
I bought my 305 in March.. 20th to be exact. Today, April 19th. I took it off the charger, pushed the power button, and nothing. Put it back on the charger.. Nothing, plugged it into my computer... nothing.
Have any of you had difficulty or experience problems with your 305 or 705 type computers??
Very light use, no abuse ever, not even stored without some kind of protection on it.

1. Recharge overnight, then try to turn it on.
2. If that doesn't work, do a system reset (described in the manual).
I think some early versions of the firmware were buggy, requiring a reset from time to time. I haven't had any problems with the latest firmware, which I installed several months ago. Your manual also describes how to locate and install new firmware.

Worst case, it must still be under warranty.
Tried everything in the manual.. can't do much when the device doesn't respond to anything.. ie.. power supply. It just straight up died. I bought it at REI which means I can take it back for any reason, and I have :). Now I'm just paranoid as hell about touching the new one, wondering if it will die as well
Thanks for the suggestions and replys

Just out of curiosity, any reason for going with 305 instead of 705?

Do a soft reset and if that does not work do a hard reset (You will loose all your info)

I have the Garmin 305 which I bought back in Sept. 2006. It gets heavy use (and slight abuse). It plays dead once in a while and (so far) the reset fixes it each time.

Mine had a problem where the reset got very difficult to press. This seemed to happen after a bunch of winter rain/mud riding this year. I was putting off sending it back, but then it also had the 'dead' problem you described. I charged it up, and the next morning it wouldn't turn on. I charged it again, then it came back on. I sent it back for warranty repair the next day. I've had it for 11 months :)
New one seems ok so far, I've only had it a month or so.

Cost and availability. When I get the 305 mastered and use ALL the functions, then maybe I'd consider going to the 705, but the 305 suits my novice needs for now. That is.. when its working :-/
I tried all the resets, soft reset, hard reset the unit was totally unresponsive, like somebody had removed the battery from it all together. Never used it in any adverse conditions, sunny days only, only used a total of 4 times, so I was bummed as hell when it went kaput on me.
If my replacement dies, it will be a sign that I shouldn't have one, and I"ll just get a refund and move on to something else. Hopefully that wont be the case.
Thanks again to all that helped in this
I had a similar problem and no reset or any other procedure fixed the problem, so I sent it back to Garmin. I hope to get it back within the next week or two with the problems solved. We'll see.
People seem to have good luck with Garmin's customer service. If you fill out the form on the website, they will tell you where to send it (with a specific tracking code).
Thanks.
UPDATE: Right after I posted that, I received my Garmin in the mail (it is either a new or refurbished unit). They had a super quick turnaround and I had my first ride this morning with the "new" device and it worked perfectly. Go Garmin!
UPDATE:
Garmin Edge 305 Replacement ... REPLACED.
I am now on my 3rd 305 unit. I was riding down Kennedy Ave. in Los Gatos yesterday, and the unit shut off on me twice.. lost most of the data, and wouldn't not pick up my speed. Took it home.. reset it / re-programmed it and went on same ride today.. and again.. zap!! although it shut off 3 different times as opposed to only 2. I went from the ride.. to REI.. and literally took the 305 from the display case. So.. now.. being on my 3rd 305 since march, I am now considering hiring a witch doctor to bless this thing so I can just go back to riding my bike.
I'm out of ideas, and I am definetly not thinking of the 705, seeing as how my 305 can't function with any measure of reliability. If this little thing wasn't so cool.. I'd be done with it long ago. :(
