Mountain Biking - Upgrade or not?

I have a 2000 gary fisher marlin, i was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade the fork to something with more travel. i ride aggressive xc, becoming more of a trail/freerider. the bike is what limits me, i plan on getting something better like a bullit but for the meantime i was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade the fork,or should i just put that money torwards getting a bullit.

Can I assume 2 or 3 inch travel now. Rules of geometry usually make it so you can go 1 inch either way (simply put, too much travel is dangerous to your headtube and will mess with the handling too much as it isn't built for it). So max out around 4 inches of travel in the front. Thats not a lot. If this is a temp upgrade then look at geeting the MX or something in that lineup for a good trail fork.

I'd keep riding that bike as is and upgrade the whole bike when you can afford it.

unless it's going to be a LONG ways down the road before you will be able to purchase the new bike.

less travel will teach you to ride smoother as well.

I think you shouldn't upgrade. Instead, use that money to buy a better whole new bike. For example, one that has a nicer fork ;)

if you want a nice fork now then get one now. buy a bullit frame (if that's what you really want) when you spot a good deal. then swap the components or upgrade as you see fit.

personally, i'd keep the marlin as is and develop my skills while saving up for the bullit - unless of course, you can afford to do both.

yeah, if the bullit is gonna be over a season away (by that i mean spring to late summer) i'd pick up a cheap fork. the MX series is a good one to look at for 100mm. this is one situation where a used fork on ebay might be a really good option. the better fork will help you build up confidence on your current bike, making the trasition to a monster FS rig a little easier. If you keep the fork you have now, you might miss out on improving the skills you will develop over a full season of riding.

I'd imagine you could get a used MXC for less then $150 since riding seasons are ending for some areas. $150 bucks over 6-7 months of saving isnt going to delay your bullit very much anyway. let us know what you end up doing.
