Heres a great website that Salt Lake City, UT has put of for cyclists, the site covers trail maps, master plans, government relations, a newselter, contact information for the MBAC of SLC and much more. Its a great website, but i wonder why i havent seen this website, or heard about it in the papers, radio, or tv... Heck, i couldnt even find the site in the search engines unless i knew the exact name of the committie! Its a great website, but i doubt more then a handfull of people know about it, its too bad.

As cyclist activits, we need to get the word out about these type of websites and information not only to the cycling world, but also to the general public, as they could use the information alot more then most cyclists...

So, does your local city / state have a MBAC of its own? Do you know about it? How about a website that offers cycling advocacy information in your local area? Id like to see other sites of the same nature.

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition helps the San Diego Association of Governments keep their very attractive and informative full-colour bike route map up-to-date. The City of San Diego also has a bicycle coordinator, a professional traffic engineer responsible for road design issues affecting cyclists. He's a great guy, very responsive and helpful, but unfortunately also someone who is afraid to ride a bike in traffic.

The Encinitas City Council has just appointed me to their new 11-member Environmental Advisory Committee. Naturally, bicycle accommodations will be a major part of my agenda. Stay tuned ... this might be fun.

Here's one for the state of MAINE www.exploremaine.org/bike
there are maps and other info useful to tourers.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is an organization that promotes cycling and does lobbying at the legislature. They are responsible for getting laws on the books for bicyclists and for the hiring of a bicycle advocate within the Dept. of Transportation. They have even gotten questions concerning bikes on the Driver Examination Test to get a driver's license.
Their web address, www.BikeMaine.org

I was a charter member of the now-disbanded Boise, Idaho MBAC. It lasted about 3 years or so. The mayor was fairly supportive at first; loved the photo-ops every spring as he'd take a ride in to the office with his cyclist/advocate cronies. It got tense when his developer friends and, amazingly, the local Chamber of Commerce, urged him to distance himself from the cyclists. Evidently they were afraid that cyclists would be to "radical" in pressing for bike-friendly facilities, somehow at the expense of development and growth.
