Considering that the rider is on the heavy side: 180 lbs. With the advent of better spokes now, it almost seems a mute point.
But are 2.0 spokes a worth while option on a 32 spoke wheel, or is 1.8 preferable on a 36 spoke wheel? Are 36 spoke wheels going by the way side?

More thin spokes are generally better than a few thick ones (according to Sheldon Brown).
Personally I like 2.0/1.8 on either 32 or 36 spoke wheel.
There is some evidence that a double butted spoke will wear better, and have less failures than straight guage spokes (at least thats what I remember reading in Brandts book).
I don't think that as long there are folks who want reliable wheels that 36 spoked wheels will ever fall by the wayside. with a 36 spoked wheel if I break one I can
limp home, on a 16 or 20 spoke wheel end if I break a spoke I walk home.
Just my .02 worth,
Marty
