I'm thinking about buying the Thomson X2 stem will the 70mm one be fine with my 57cm bianchi pista?

Hm, well I was used to my stock pista stem but it has a inner crack and I need to replace it asap. anyone know the length of the 07 stock pista stems?

70mm is really short. Try 100mm and it will seem more normal. 90mm is what i use when i want short.

A shorter stem really isn't that bad. I've done down to an 80 before. If you want your bike to fit because you have short arms then get the 70. You'll forget about how "twitchy" your bike is after 4minutes.

remember not everyone is made the same. You can't expect your fit to be the same as his and call it "normal"

I ride a 57cm, I'm 6'0 if that helps.

using a 60 with low rise risers. facilitates catlike maneuvers in el traffico.
no difference when no handsing it if that is any indicator. yessir.

Why do you think you need such a short stem?

I have a super short stem (70mm) when I run risers, and the change in handling is barely noticeable. I have it that short from when i was recovering from a broken elbow and wanted the bars closer and higher.

90-100 mm is pretty standard on stock bikes. I'd get out a ruler or take the old one to the LBS and just do a side by side comparison. Those Thomson stems are beautiful, but you could buy 3-4 dimensions for the price and experiment.

If you are looking to upgrade your bike for the sake of upgrades, the stem should be one of the last things you look at. You will notice zero difference between a Thompson and what you are currently using.

He is saying that because of an internal crack on his stem he needs a new one. He found that thompson but isnt sure if it being that short is going to work with him.

Anyway, take out a ruler and measure your current stem. If it's comfortable buy one that is the same length and rise. If you feel too stretched out buy one that is shorter. If you feel too cramped buy one that is longer.

my thinking is that shorter for a more townie/stunty riding style, and longer for a more racy profile?
i dunno.

i like a shorter stem (90mm) with slight posi rise (+ 5 degrees) and risers on one of my bikes. this setup makes it very easy to control the bike and the performance in traffic is great. My other bike is more aero and I believe faster. My arms arent that long so I'd never do longer than 100mm. BTW to the OP... I'm 6' tall, too.

it's not twitchy a la low trail, it's simply a bit easier to turn quickly. if you like responsiveness, go for it.

Like that, but backwards. I ride 130 on all my bikes thanks to my 78" wingspan and short legs.

it's not twitchy a la low trail, it's simply a bit easier to turn quickly. if you like responsiveness, go for it.

yeah, safer is better. she has no qualms about brakes, they save lives (she rides a brake on her iro).
