Introductions - Hola from Tucson!

I am seriously tempted to go car-free and found this website, which is just so rad! I've been lurking for awhile reading some very interesting thoughtful threads. I'm so glad I found this forum.

I actually don't own a bicycle as of yet, but that's why I'm doing research. I don't even know where to start. Thankfully my partner-in-crime was an avid cyclist and can speak the language.

There are some very interesting bicycle associations here in Tucson, but the tension between cyclists and drivers is palpable! Even though there are numerous bicycle margins in Tucson, it's not a city I feel totally safe to commute to work on a bicycle.

I live near a major public transit depot though, so that will be my way to get to and from work. My partner and I want to get bicyles with heavy duty panniers for getting groceries. We live near a co-op and farmer's market, which I am grateful for.

Of all the cities that I've cycled (recreation not commuting) in, I believe Tucson is one of the most bike friendly, with the top being Portland OR. I'm not sure if you're commuting within the downtown area or foothills to downtown; either way, I think it's worth it (this time of year) as there's substantial bike lanes along a few major roads. Of course, the major heat is coming and that's probably the biggest negative, especially if there aren't any showers at work.

Tucson has a lot of bike lanes, the problem is that it is an extremely car-centric town. There's no progressive thinking or planning towards alternative methods of transportation. There's a lot of animosity towards cyclists from vehicle drivers, because cyclists are seen as impeding drivers. Tucson drivers are not only oil addicts, they're SUV and full-size pick-up enthusiasts as well, which can cause cyclists some discomfort as far as safety. I really wish Tucson were more forward thinking but unfortunately the mucky-mucks who own the numerous car dealerships in town are also in bed with politicians here, which I think has been a major problem :(

You mentioned Portland, and that is one place that I'm extremely interested in relocating to. Essentially, I'm looking for a walkable community. I heard Portland is actually implementing a car-free Sunday, or at least a certain time period on Sunday that where cars are not allowed on the streets. This is something they've been doing in certain European countries for decades (car-free Sundays).

No, I unfortunately had a conflict. My sister and bro-in-law live there and I visit regularly - I'll be there end of next week bike in hand!

I generally ride up in Oro Valley.
