Albuquerque road riding????

Coming into Albuquerque for a couple of months. Any suggestions where to ride? Looking for 20-70 mi. loop(s) 2-5k of altitude. Does anyone know the total altitude for the Santa Fe Century?

I live down in Carrizozo (about 2.5 hours south of Albuqerque) and it's hard to find many roadies in New Mexico. But there should be some rides around Albuqerque. Try calling some of the local bike shops listed in Alb.

There's a lot of riding in and around Albuquerque... bicycle friendly in my opinion. A day doesn't go by that I don't see roadies here. Put your climbing gears on because there are some great roads on the east side such as the Sandia Crest road, the road to Madrid - to name a few. Also, Google "Albuquerque bicycle map" for a bike map of the city - it's on the city's website.

Some of the nice places to ride in and around Albuquerque include:

* Bosque trail: Park at Alameda and the river, and go south. And go south. And go south. If you do the entire Chris Chavez loop at the southern end, my recollection is that it's about 35 miles out and back, all on paved off-street trail. Popular with roller bladers and weekend cyclists, but once you're south of Central you will have left most of those behind and have lots of wide open trail.

* North 14: Park at the post office in Tijeras, or for a bit more climbing, park at the Smith's at Central and Tramway and head up old 66 to Tijeras. Take North 14 toward Madrid, and hang a right on 344 to do Heartbreak Hill. You can either take Frost Road back to North 14 from 344, or take 344 all the way to old 66 at Edgewood; either way, you'll end up back in Tijeras eventually. Mileage varies with the exact route - plan on at least 40, and as much as 70. Better like climbing to do this one!

* South 14: Start at the Smith's on Central and Tramway, take old 66 to Tijeras, then take south 14 (may now be called 337 - I don't remember which number is on the signs) up to the top. 50 miles, maybe? Haven't done this one in a while, so I don't remember.

There are lots of others - those are just some of my favorites.

The road has been called 337 for about 15 years but many locals still refer to it as "South 14". Great area for road and mountain biking.

I hope ABQ is a roadie town. Astana had a training camp there in Feb.

Thanks for the routes. We are working more hours and days than I would like but have managed to find some great rides. The Homewood Suites is my temp residence. It is from there I start. Sandia Crest and the Peak are awesome rides. Love the bike lanes here on the road., love to see L.A. get on this program. Looking forward to ride "Heartbreak Hill" route. Got acclaimated but still adjusting the breezy conditions. Again thanks for the info. Love the green chiles on everything except my cinammon roll from the Frontier!!!!! Cheers
