There has been some recent discussion between some of the Dallas area members about a Texas area vintage ride. Through this discussion it has also been made apparent that no one's schedule seems to work with anyone else's. So we're going to put it to a majority vote, which ever date can get the most attendance, that's what we're going to go with.

--------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATES AND INFORMATION:

Start Time/Place information:

Time: Sunday June 8th about 9am.
Place: Celebration Park, Allen Tx.
Distance: 35mi
Pace: approx 16mph average

Ride start location map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=celebration+park,+allen,+tx&ie=UTF8&ll=33.107468,-96.62703&spn=0.004062,0.007274&t=h&z=17

I plan to be in the West parking lot, along Malone Rd. Dark Gray GMC, with a Gazelle (white or blue) in the back. I'll be there fairly early.

Looks like we have a strong canidate for a ride route: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/tx/allen/821408158978

Also, there has been some questions on what is considered Vintage. I am pretty flexible with the definition. On VeloBase.com where I run a vintage component database the cut off is approx '93 (15 years) and also about when STI shifting started taking off. If it's lugged steel, even if it's newer than 93, that won't exclude you either. :)

-------------------------------
I suggest a distance of 30-40 miles, conversation pace. I can come up with any number of routes in the North Dallas area which will get us out on some country roads. Others have suggested White Rock Lake as a possible location, however right now there is a considerable amount of construction work going on down there and much of the trail around the lake is not very conductive to 2-abreast riding. If any other members want to suggest other start locations and routes, I am open to them and will happily go with what ever plan gets the largest turn out. Anyone who is interested, has suggestions, etc please let me know in the next week at which time I hope to make a "set time & location" decision.

Sundays are generally better for me, and I do need to show off the Crescent.

Based on what feedback I've heard, I'm going to make the call for June 8th, starting around 9am. I'm thinking of using Celebration Park (I think that's in Allen) as the starting point, but that may change.

Ryan, bring the Panasonic, deep-V's and fixed gear and all. :p Having another rider with some knowledge of the roads out the direction we're headed would be of great help. :)

Oops- Just checked the schedule. I'll be on an Alaskan Cruise at that time. I'll post some pics from the boat.

How slow is conversational pace? The only vintage ride I have is my '53 Shwinn DX Klunker.

Guessing 15-16 average.

Still working on a route. Rode some of the roads I had planned to use today, and not many of them are very 2-abreast frieindly. Need to decide how important that is vs getting out for some more scenic roads. May have to mix it up. That time of morning on a Sunday none of the roads will be very busy.

I doubt I'll be on this ride for various reasons (no vintage bikes, busy on Sundays, slower, etc). One route I'll suggest, though. A couple of times now, I've ridden from Garland to White Rock Lake. To do this, I went down La Prada from 635 to Barnes Bridge Road and turned east. A couple of blocks down there, Bike Route 280W starts and goes all the way to WRL. That's only a 5 mile stretch or so, but it's mostly on non-busy residential roads that would actually make pretty good 2-abreast riding. There are quite a few "Bike Routes" scattered about over Dallas, and most of them I haven't been on, but there may be other similar possibilities like this.

Thanks for the suggestion Stephen. I'm actually trying to avoid white rock right now due to all the construction down there that I don't see being finished within the next month. Right now we're planning on leaving from Celebration Park in Allen, heading north and east from there, likely to McKinney & Lucas.

Wow, that really is a "Thing"! Not sure how it would treat you for a 35mi ride around north dallas though.

It would have been great for the Tour Dallas, actually, too bad I didn't have it then. Wouldn't work at all for a tour with a few people unless they all wanted to ride at 6 mph the whole way. I'll try to get it on one of these charity rides- one with a huge number of people would work best. 35 miles around Dallas might be okay if you didn't mind taking 5 hours or so.

When I saw "Vintage" I instantly thought old Schwinn cruisers and got excited for a second.

I've done 50 milers on my '77 Schwinn Typhoon.

But hey, I could bring out my 80s Centurion fixed gear too.

When I think "vintage bicycle", I'm also thinking old single-speeds. Then when you go to the "Classic and Vintage Forum", it's all about bikes that seem fairly modern to me. So I know how you feel.

The time won't work for me, but my Worksman is 6 months old and fits the "vintage" definition above. :)

I'll be doing a pre-ride of the route this coming Sunday morning. I should know after that if any changes will be needed to the route. Over the weekend on the club rides we encountered a little road construction on some of the back rounds out near Lucas, however I think the route I have planned out does not cover that section of road. But I want to be sure before I put my final stamp of approval on the route. The only other question mark is one road up in New Hope, google maps satellite images make the road appear to be well paved, but again want to be sure by actually traveling the roads. At worst, we'll have to take about a 2 mile detour up in new hope to make the route 37mi.

If anyone is interested in doing the pre-ride with me, send me a PM. We're leaving from Independence and Legacy in Plano around 8am next Sunday.

If anyone is interested in a slightly shorter route (25ish I think), please PM me so I can try to get a ride leader for that route.

I'm sure I can rummage up a few riders for an encore ride after you get settled back in Dallas. :)

Looking like the Crescent's not gonna debut at this ride - I'm likely to be otherwise occupied, dammit.

I've been trying to ride in the wind, just to get trained up for the return trip. I was cranking home from work last night when I was hit in the face by a gust that brought me to a complete stop. This could be a challenge!:thumb:

Sorry to hear it truman. Was looking forward to seeing that Crescent.

ticwanos: hopefully the wind will subside somewhat by Sunday morning. Not sure what the gusts are going to be at, but hopefully working together we'll survive. :)

I have been off the bike so much that my fitness level is at an all time low. Got the Falcon down tonight and gave her a good cleaning, and adjusted drive train. Took her out for a ride around the neighborhood. Due to lack of conditioning, probably not gonna make this ride.

Jeff - There's a 25mi option. Or bring out the bike in the morning, say hello to everyone, and then maybe follow the route in the car in case anyone needs to SAG?

I'm doing the "say hello to everyone" option. I might be able to do the SAG thing, but won't know until later tonight when everyone else finishes up deciding what I should do with my day:bang:

Thanks to everyone who came out today. Think the final count was some where between 18-22 riders. Everyone made it back safe and sound, and that's the best part of any ride. That and drooling over all the beautiful bikes!

full ride report with photos to be posted later. Now... FOOD.
