Commuting - Studded tires

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am looking for some studded tires for my winter commute. I am not sure i need them each day so I wonder if it is too damaging to ride on pavement with them. It just that for the past two days the streets have been solid ice and I'd like some traction. Any suggestions anyone. Oh...the are for my cyclocross bike (700s).
Aebike carries innova studded tires for 700c wheels.

You will wear the studs out quicker riding on normal pavement that is the main drawback depending on you're weather you could leave them on all winter. Some have opted to just get a second cheap wheelset for winter also.

Those Innova tires are cr@p. Nokian W106, however, uses carbide studs, which don't wear out on pavement. Peter White carries them in your size, and I'd bet most bike shops around you do, too. It's worth the extra $17.
I commute year round in new england, I have been riding the same set of Nokian mount and ground stodded tires for three years now. The Nokians use tungsten carbide studs and they don't wear out when riden on the pavement. My studs go on the day before thenksgiving and come off the end of March. They work very well on ice, the bike is as sure footed as it is on dry pavement. The only thing you need to be aware of is they are a slight bit more slipery on dry pavement and there is a slight bit more rolling resistance than a non studded tire. The innova tire do not use tungsten carbide studs and they do wear fast on pavement, I went through a set in 1 month before I got the Nokians. Hope this helps.

The thing about winter riding is that you always have to be prepared for ice. It may be great in the morning and a warm moist front moves in and the next thing you know you are heading home on black ice. Mrfix is right, put the money into the Nokians so you can leave them on the whole season. It is cheap insurance.

Yes, yes, the Nokians are rock solid. I ran them on both front and rear three winters ago, then only on the front for the past two winters. No crashes, no loss of traction, less rolling resistence.

Last year I ordered a pair of Nokian Mount and Grounds from my LBS, but by January the supplier was still out of stock, and the Innova's (26x1.5) were the only ones they had. Given they were half the price, I decided to go ahead and get them. Not having owned any other studded tires, I have nothing to compare them to.
I rode on mine for a couple of months last winter and there is a fair amount of wear on the studs. But, if one is looking for a inexpensive, low use tire the Innova is sufficient. I ride just about everyday, so the Nokian would be a better deal for me. Maybe next time...
