Then go buy some cycling clothes. You're going to need a pair of shorts and a jersey. Get bib shorts, if you can afford it. Also, get some gloves and start looking into clipless pedals, though you won't need them for your first time at the track. I also recommend a pair of sunglasses, I use some cheap $9 "landscaper" sunglasses that I picked up at Lowe's.

i have gloves, glasses, a helmet, a cap, shoes, and clipless pedals. i'm too poor to afford clothes right now though. the question is, what kind of common stuff is ok to wear?
Don't wear anything baggy that will flap around in the wind.
Wear slimmer fit shorts/pants/windbreaker if you don't have any legit cycling gear and a tee that fits.

Will you be racing? What events?

It's his first time. I'm assuming it's a beginner session.

USCF? "Run what you brung" citizens? Fixed gear? Road bike? Details! Give us _something_.
I'm assuming he's going to the Opening Weekend at Kissena. USCF, with A, B and C fields. People have definitely raced in non-cycling clothes before although it's rare.
I know I'm finding this thread a little late, but you might want to check goodwill if you're really hurting for money. I've gotten a couple of jerseys there for $4 each.
When I go to the Velodrome, I just wear a t-shirt and short shorts.
Spend the money on bicycle components.

i'll check out goodwill for the jerseys, do they have a section for them or do i have to go through hella clothes? it was a beginner sesh at hellyer in san jose, ca. it wore me the **** out
eh, just get some cheap athletic clothes from target or something. stuff that wicks sweat, etc.
finding a jersey at a thrift store is possible, however unlikely.
and yeah, track is way harder than it looks isn't it?

They're not separated out, and are either in with the athletic wear or sometimes in with Polo shirts, at least at my Goodwill in Austin. I can usually walk by pretty quick and see if there are any there. It might not be worth a special trip, but if you are in the neighborhood I would stop in.

the beginner sessions at hellyer are a lot of fun. i went to the race ready clinic that afternoon, you should go to that after you do a few more beginner sessions. lots of info and training about riding in tight packs, sprinting in a pack, and even a few drills involving bumping into people.
