Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - It's official.....I'm doing a triathlon the 28th of June!

Awesome! The idea of a triathalon is there in the back of my mind, once I get into better shape. . . Good luck and congrats on that!

How's your swimming? I do a mean doggie paddle, but can't freestyle at all. I got a bug to try swimming though, so I've been teaching myself (w/ a book & video) for about two weeks with some progress. Long road ahead for me though. Lucky I'm not training for anything though :)

Rock on! Keep us posted.
Wow. Incredible! Have you started the running/swimming training yet?

Hmm, I sense the gauntlet has been thrown down here on clydes. Tom, anyone, do they have combination swimming/cycling events? Running is out for me because of my knees.

Is there ANYTHING you won't do, Tom? :)

Yeah, you can do a team entry with a runner to cover the running. As far as I'm concerned, if you can do the other 2......
I sure understand the knee issues. ;)
Actually, I don't care where I finish, my goal is to simply finish it up, first last or in the middle of the pack, it's all good to me.

Yeah, but I'd get in trouble if I talked about the things I won't do.

Yes. I have seen something called AquaBike at some Triathlon web sites which I believe is the swimming and biking part of the Tri.

Interesting. I guess I'll have to learn how to swim. Is learning to swim that much harder than learning to ride a bike?

Not really, and yu don't get road rash from falling over. ;) The biggest issue I have is that oit now requires much more energy to stay on the surface since I lost my body fat. Muscle has a density >1 and fat has a density <1, so I now have flotation issues. :p

I answered my own question nearly two years ago. From alt.support.diet in August 2006:
********
Today, for the first time in two decades, I went swimming. My gym had a
promotion at Water World in Phoenixville:
http://www.waterworldrec.com/
I was in the water for more than 2.5 hours. Much of that time I spent
treading water; I found swimming to be harder than I had thought.
Crossing the pool a few times was very tiring. Some of it may have been
my technique, or lack thereof. I invented a combination breaststroke
and doggie paddle that has to be seen to be disbelieved.
Despite my limited success, I will be back to Water World for more
swimming. It felt wonderful to have some of the weight taken off my
joints. Although I have to admit I am feeling the exercise now. I'm
sore all over!

Not having gotten a bicycle yet, I hadn't discovered the true nature of pain....

Very impressive sir, good luck with it!
Historian, I've seen triathlons where you kayak instead of swim and mountainbike instead of cycle, I don't know what you do instead of run though, but I'm sure they must have something.

If it weren't for the running, I'd be ready for triathlon (duathlon?) right now! I used to be quite the swimmer when I was younger (not that I'm even old :-p). Doing a triathlon is certainly in my "lifetime goals" list.
Good luck, Tom!

Cool. Go get'em Tom!
I neglected to register for the one I had in mind this summer. I may just do it unofficially anyway and have my wife track my time. My issue is that I wanted to have my knee looked at before I started running again. (have had surgery once and have seen minor issues when under load again). So I missed the registration. However, if I have the doc clear my knee, I might just go out and do it on my own anyway! Does that count?

Guys,
I signed up for my first as well. Mine is Aug 2. I started swimming Jan 8 and have learned to really enjoy it. I can now cover 100 (25 yard) lengths in 1 hour. I read the book Total Immersion and utilized much of the material. The best teaching device for me is watching others in the pool at the Y as I am swimming. The other swimmers also point things out from time to time. Last week guy I was talking to told me he thinks I should look farther ahead in the pool instead of straight down at the bottom. This really helped me as it made me feel longer. My legs feel more even with my body.

Congrats Tom! I've been thinking about sprint tri's. I can do the run (slow) and ride, but I'd have to find a place to train for the swim.
