Classic & Vintage - Oh for the love of a saddle cable.

I've run into a bit of a problem in the mixte mockup. I need a saddle cable or bridge cable or whatever you call it for the rear centepull old school brake on the mixte. It needs to be long enough to engage both sides of the brake caliper from the front side of the seat tube. I looked at using some cables from a mountain bike cantilever center pull brake but they are waaaayyy too long I need something about twice the length of a normal Weinmann or dia compe centerpull cable. I even thought of making a little mold and cutting some brake cable to length and pouring the metal around them which it looks like how they are made but I think the ends are made from something a little tougher than lead. Does anyone out there have such a cable they would be willing to give up for a good cause?

Unfortunately, I don't have a cable but a suggestion. I have been told that motorcycle shops can make cables. I did inquire at one some time ago and the guy said he could do it, but I never followed through. Couldn't hurt to ask....

You just need the correct barrel thingy. It fits the brake arm and has a set screw that tightens on the cable. It might cost you $2. I have one around here somewhere. Bonney Lake Bikes should have one since they deal with ALOT of BMX bikes that have to route cables around seat tubes. I'll see if I can find a link somewhere.

I think that it is called either a bridle or a bridal cable...

I've seen mixte frames before and they had an extra long straddle or bridle cable or what ever the heck its called. I have the saddle and the adjusting barrel is no problem I just need the cable. I know someone on this forum has to have an idea on where to get one.

Can you post a picture of where it goes? I have a 1982 Peugeot Mixte and I can't quite picture it.

Now I understand, my Peugeot uses side pull brakes, so that is not an issue. Could you change to side pulls?

The caliper straddle cable is too short. They made a much longer variant for mixtes that curved around ahead of the seat tube - I have one from a Schwinn Super LeTour if you're interested. Rusty, but it'll do the job.

I could but then I would have to buy another set of calipers and they need to pull from the bottom and I haven't seen them or can you reverse the cable clamp and the adjusting barrel so the pull is from the bottom? I really like the look of the centerpull and I know someone has the answer.

Unfortunately, lengthening the straddle cable reduces a centerpull caliper's braking leverage. Rear brake cable routing has always been a challenge with mixte or step-through frames, and this is one application where my mountain bike's under-chainstay mounting might have made sense.

Thanks for the link to the Rivendell straddle cable ends, since three of my bikes have Weinmann centerpull calipers.

I had to make a longer straddle cable for the rear brake in order to use Mafac Competitions on a Raleigh Super Course mixte. I soldered pieces of brass tubing to the cable ends. I didn't notice any loss of braking power. In fact, I'm not convinced that it reduces leverage, since the pull will be more perpendicular to the brake arm with a longer straddle cable

Braking shouldn't be a problem and my wife rarely reaches the speed of sound :) except when she is cleaning the house then look out.
